Protein Research Aims To Innovate Biology, Mark D. Weinstein

A group of student researchers at Cedarville University are hoping their recent work will prove to be innovative in the field of biological sciences. Led by Heather Kuruvilla, Ph.D., professor of biology, the researchers are studying Tetrahymena thermophila, a single-celled organism commonly found in freshwater ponds.

The research, which focuses on the presence of proteins in T. thermophila and their subsequent role as a chemorepellent in the organisms, could lead to advances in cancer research. Netrin proteins act as biomarkers in certain types of cancer.

Cedarville University Department of English, Literature, and Modern Languages will host “Living in the Kiln,” the 2016 undergraduate literary conference, on February 13. Visiting poet Karen An-Hwei Lee, Ph.D., will read from her works at the conference co-sponsored by Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD), Cedarville University’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society.

The conference centers on the theme “Living in the Kiln: Reviving the Self through Literary Conversation.” Presentations will begin at 8:30 a.m. and go throughout the day until 4:45 p.m.

Third-year professional pharmacy student Jordan Long (Chillicothe, Ohio) of Cedarville University is one out of just four pharmacy students from across the nation to be chosen for the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Student Leadership Award.

The awards are provided by Procter & Gamble, a consumer goods company based out of Cincinnati. Long will be presented his honor at the 2016 APhA-ASP awards ceremony during the APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition in Baltimore from March 4-7, 2016. Each recipient will also receive a $500 scholarship with the plaque.

Over the past two years, students from the Cedarville University School of Pharmacy have worked closely with Cedar Medical Clinic in Ghana, where they help a local physician make a difference and spread the Gospel to the African nation.

Phillip Thornton, Ph.D., vice chair and associate professor of pharmacy practice, will travel to Ghana on Thursday, Feb. 11on a 10-day missions trip. Thornton will travel with Phil Black, a retired pharmacist from Beavercreek and advisory council member for Cedarville's School of Pharmacy.

Each year an estimated 15 million pints of blood are transfused in the United States that help save the lives of millions of people. On February 17 and 18, Cedarville University’s chapter of the Christian Nurses Association (CNA) will hold its semiannual blood drive from noon-4 p.m. in the Stevens Student Center event rooms.

Three Cedarville University School of Pharmacy students will serve employees at Meijer in Tipp City, Ohio, by conducting preventative health screenings on February 17 and 25.

Tiffany Zehel, from Parma, Ohio; Chelsae Heinz, from Redford, Michigan; and Mallory Thompson, from Xenia, Ohio will be conducting the health screenings as a part of their service project requirements for graduation.

Health screenings provide early detection of diseases that might have otherwise gone undiscovered. Screen tests check for multiple types of cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure or cholesterol and osteoporosis.

In the midst of flu season, health care professionals stand on the front lines by taking care of sick patients. But being on the front lines comes with its own set of risks, and a recent partnership between the Cedarville University School of Pharmacy, Ohio Valley Surgical Hospital (OVSH) and several independent pharmacies in Springfield, Ohio, is bringing changes for health care employees.

Through a newly developed wellness initiative, employees at OVSH will have greater assistance in dealing with diabetes or other health issues through their local pharmacy, rather than the traditional office visit.

Cedarville University alumnus George Goodwin, M.D., has received the 2015 Amway Hero Patriotism Award for his service as a doctor in the United States Army, where he has faithfully served both stateside and abroad.

George, a 1992 graduate of Cedarville, serves as the chief of medical readiness in the U.S. Army’s Office of the Surgeon General. George, who holds the rank of Colonel, has served in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years.

Freshman Retention Rate Tops National Average, Mark D. Weinstein

Cedarville University continues to outpace the national average in freshman retention rates, according to the latest data provided by the University’s admissions office. A total of 784 freshmen, 95.7 percent, will return to Cedarville for the spring semester.

Cedarville's retention rate is higher than the national average for both private (91.0 percent) and public (90.0 percent) four-year institutions. The percentage also ranks higher than the national average for private colleges with higher selectivity rates (92.0 percent).

This year’s freshman retention rate, which is Cedarville’s best since 2012-13, is also higher than its five-year average of 95.6 percent.

The Cedarville University School of Pharmacy has received a generous donation of $10,000 from the Walgreens Corporation as part of the company’ Diversity Donation program.

Cedarville University is churning out graduates who are highly sought after by companies and organizations around the world. A recent survey of 2015 graduates revealed that 96.8 percent of them had found employment or were enrolled in graduate school within six months of graduation.
