Some plants, when transported to non-endemic areas undergo reproduction and rapid growth and will out-compete native plants and become weeds. These weeds then become troublesome giving rise to socioeconomic and environmental impacts. Water hyacinth (Eicchornia crassipes), one of such weeds is often considered the world’s worst invasive aquatic species of weed, indigenous to the Amazon Basin of South America and has spread over the years to various areas in Africa and Asia. This dissertation analyses the problem of water hyacinth infestation in the Wouri River Basin, done through the quantification of its socio-economic and environmental impacts on riparian communities. It …
Global Approach And Regional Cooperation Of Black Sea Countries On The Problem Of Invasive Species, Anna Rabotnova
Global Approach And Regional Cooperation Of Black Sea Countries On The Problem Of Invasive Species, Anna Rabotnova
World Maritime University Dissertations
The productivity of water ecosystems plays a significant role in the development of human society. People delimitate oceans and the seas, however, ocean creatures are not familiar with those boundaries exist for them. They freely “travel” all over the world in and on ships, invade new ecosystems and harm them. Invasive alien species are now globally recognized as one of the biggest problems in shipping, which impacts environment, social economics and human health. Due to the international nature of shipping, it is positively to eliminate the problem of invasive species, but only to find the most efficient ways of controlling …
Onshore Ballast Water Treatment Stations : A Harbour Specific Vector Management Proposition, Lawrence A. Kuroshi
Onshore Ballast Water Treatment Stations : A Harbour Specific Vector Management Proposition, Lawrence A. Kuroshi
World Maritime University Dissertations
The discharge of Harmful Aquatic Organisms and Pathogens (HAOP) found in ships ballast water from one port environment to another can have severe ecological, environmental and economic consequences, especially when they transform into marine pests. This informs the necessity to investigate treatment options that could curtail the transfer of these organisms from a source harbour. An alternative to the conventional Ballast Water Treatment Systems is investigated and proposed in this study- it entails the onshore treatment of host port water before it is loaded as ballast water into ships. The study covered sampling of Port Harcourt Harbour water in Nigeria. …

Governance Role For Maintaining Competitiveness Of Korean Shipbuilding Industry, Dong Hwang Hwang
World Maritime University Dissertations
Although the global shipbuilding market faces a severe recession due to the shrinkage of international trade, the shipbuilding industry in Korea has contributed to economic growth and employment. Influences of government on the shipbuilding industry have dimmed and every stakeholder manages their own way without direction from the perspective of national interest. On the other hand, the mandatory reduction of CO2 emissions from ships was adopted by IMO in 2011. All possible technologies for energy efficient ships would be considered and major shipbuilding countries have invested in relevant R&D activities. Korean giant shipbuilders have some key technologies for improving fuel …
