The purpose of this symposium is to discuss the organization, design, implementation and preliminary evaluation of an inter-university collaborative learning experience that used computer mediated communication (CMC) to link graduate students in several universities to discuss issues related to distance education. The discussion is based on the Globaled project, a computer conference that was set up and implemented for the second time, during the Fall 1993 semester. Globaled was first implemented during the Spring of 1992. With the increasing offering of distance education as a graduate discipline in many traditional universities, Globaled, can be seen as a unique way to …
Against Marriage, Steven K. Homer
Against Marriage, Steven K. Homer
Faculty Scholarship
What is marriage? In the debate surrounding same-sex marriage, the central term has gone undefined. Using the Hawaii Supreme Court's decision in Baehr v. Lewin as a starting point, this Note argues that marriage lacks legal as well as experiential coherence. A series of legal and social moves intended, on the one hand, to preserve the dominance of heterosexuality over gays and lesbians and, on the other, to allow, heterosexuals to escape the dominance of heterosexuality over themselves, has left little conceptual space for marriage. That is, to speak of "extending marriage" to same-sex couples creates the illusion that marriage …

Professionalization In Comparative Perspective: Germany, Mcclelland
Professionalization In Comparative Perspective: Germany, Mcclelland
History Faculty Publications
critical social-history consciousness has abandoned to some degree the old notion that modern "professions" in the Anglo-Saxon sense could not "really" exist in Central Europe because of the heavy and early bureaucratization and/or the persistence of "feudal" or at least Stand (etat) traditions. Instead, most accept the notion of a process of dialogue between independent professions and bureaucratic authority.
The Law School Library: Its Function, Structure, And Management, Robert J. Desiderio
The Law School Library: Its Function, Structure, And Management, Robert J. Desiderio
Faculty Scholarship
The law library has a special and unique importance because of the nature of our legal system and its role as a laboratory for anyone involved in a legal proceeding. Students, faculty, lawyers, judges, and lay persons cannot accomplish legal work without the library. Law libraries, in the process of transition, are planning or implementing computer-based retrieval systems and video devices for training and instruction. Law librarians have significant responsibilities for accurate information retrieval and teaching legal research techniques.
