(Forst paragraph) Our learners are as varied as the techniques we employ in information literacy classes. There is, however, one facet common to almost all of them, and it’s technology use. Let’s look at some recent numbers from the Pew Research Center. In the 18 to 29 age group, 94% of Americans own a smartphone, that number drops to just to 89% for ages 30 to 49.1 Tablets are also common, with 64% of Gen Xers and 54% of Millennials owning tablets.2 Spending time online also cuts across generations. In a March 2018 study, Pew reported that 77% …

It’s been a robust year for reference, as reflected in our best of list. While you’ll find tried-and-true reference, such as the most recent edition of Oxford Atlas of the World, we also attempted to surface the unusual—it’s not every year we see an Atlas of Beer! Though it was a particularly good year for history texts (with books on the Renaissance, the Holocaust, and the Vietnam War), we are particularly excited about the offerings that explored subjects that have gone unacknowledged, such as the Encyclopedia of Black Comics and Unseen: Unpublished Black History from the New York Times Photo …

(First paragraph) A strong case can be made for academic library involvement in Open Educational Resources (OERs) and Affordable Course Content (ACC). Academic libraries typically employ librarians who are experts in topics aligned with OERs and ACC, including copyright, fair use, and Creative Commons (CC) licensing, as well as in finding resources to support and to map out academic curricula. Libraries are also in the unique position of having distinct and defined connections with members of all three stakeholder groups: students, faculty, and administrators.

Use Of Social Networking Site Consumer Training To Teach Information Literacy Threshold Concepts, Lucinda Rush
Use Of Social Networking Site Consumer Training To Teach Information Literacy Threshold Concepts, Lucinda Rush
Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
Introduction
Social networking sites (SNS) have been integrated seamlessly into our everyday lives, and college students are one of their biggest consumers (Lenhart, et. al. 2010). Just as consumers of Starbucks have been trained to speak the language of the corporation, ordering “venti” instead of “large”, and consumers of smart phones have come to rely on them in their every-day lives for things like directions, instant access to email, fitness apps, and more, social media users have been trained to intuitively expect and respond to things on their SNS in day-to-day life. The skills that our students have developed through …

Libguides Two Ways: Teaching Information Literacy In And Out Of The Classroom, Lucinda Rush
Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
Librarians at Old Dominion University (ODU) Libraries use the LibGuides platform in a creative way to meet immediate, practical needs. Traditionally, we have offered two types of information literacy tutorials. The first is a lengthy, module-based tutorial and is used in our information literacy-designated courses to cover skills in-depth and which students must complete over the course of a semester. The second is a short tutorial designed to give students an introduction or a refresher covering basic research skills, information literacy concepts, and library services.
Prior to migrating to a new web platform, ODU Libraries hosted short click-through tutorials on …
Intentional Synergy: The New Librarian As Co-Learner, Christopher Lawton
Intentional Synergy: The New Librarian As Co-Learner, Christopher Lawton
Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
Questions abound regarding the changing fate of libraries, and librarians, too, must reconsider their role. New Librarians increasingly find themselves serving not just as human information retrieval systems, but as “safari guides,” leading the curious through an information ecosystem growing explosively. Gone are the days of inscrutable librarians definitively announcing that they had provided all available information on a topic. Today, New Librarians need to cultivate a toolkit of skills and roles surrounding learning and inquiry, parsing new ideas quickly, challenging assumptions, and guiding their communities through the information ecosystem. As a partner, not a service provider, New Librarians shine.

Exploiting Fluencies: Educational Expropriation Of Social Networking Site Consumer Training, Lucinda Rush, Dylan E. Wittkower
Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
The idea of the digital native was based on abstraction; when we look in detail at the digital activities of high-school and college students, we see deskilling and consumer training rather than information literacy or technical fluency. Yet that training is still training, and may be adaptable in such a way that it can become a literacy—in, for example, the way militaries have mobilised skill-sets produced through gaming. We too can and should mine the narrow and profit-driven consumer training that emerging adults have undergone for kinds of inquiry and critical engagement for which they may have inadvertently been given …
