Hong Kong's Inflation Under The U.S. Dollar Peg : The Balassa-Samuelson Effect Or The Dutch Disease?, Hiroyuki Imai
Hong Kong's Inflation Under The U.S. Dollar Peg : The Balassa-Samuelson Effect Or The Dutch Disease?, Hiroyuki Imai
CAPS Working Paper Series
Despite establishing the U.S. dollar peg in 1983, Hong Kong’s annual rate of inflation during the 1985-96 period was 4.3% higher than that of the U.S. The Dutch disease is found to be the main reason for Hong Kong’s high long-term rate of inflation. The Balassa-Samuelson effect contributed relatively little. From the 1980s, the relocation of Hong Kong manufacturing to southern China generated strong demand for Hong Kong’s tradable services to support the industrial activity in the mainland and subsequently raised the process of tradable services in Hong Kong. Growing wage costs and consumption demand, which accompanied the boom led …
Testing For A Nonlinear Relationship Among Fundamentals And Exchange Rates In The Erm, Yue Ma, Angelos Kanas
Testing For A Nonlinear Relationship Among Fundamentals And Exchange Rates In The Erm, Yue Ma, Angelos Kanas
CAPS Working Paper Series
We employ two nonparametric nonlinear testing methodologies, namely a nonparametric nonlinear cointegration approach and nonlinear Granger causality approach, to test for a nonlinear relationship between macroeconomic fundamentals and exchange rates for two country-pairs, namely the Netherlands-Germany and France-Germany. The result suggest that there is nonlinear cointegration among money, output and exchange rates for Netherlands-Germany, which can be interpreted as evidence of a long-run nonlinear relationship. For France-Germany, we fail to find evidence of nonlinear cointegration, but we find nonlinear Granger causality from French money to the FFr/DM exchange rate. These findings may be interpreted as evidence of a dynamic nonlinear …
Age Differences In Work Adjustment : A Study Of Male And Female Managerial Stress, Coping Strategies And Locus Of Control In Hong Kong, Oi Ling Siu, Paul E. Spector, Cary L. Cooper, Kate Sparks, Ian Donald
Age Differences In Work Adjustment : A Study Of Male And Female Managerial Stress, Coping Strategies And Locus Of Control In Hong Kong, Oi Ling Siu, Paul E. Spector, Cary L. Cooper, Kate Sparks, Ian Donald
Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series
The present study is a 15 month project which involved data collection from Hong Kong managers at three points to examine mechanisms by which age would relate to work well-being. A total of 634 managers, both male and female, was drawn by random sampling and purposive sampling methods. The results showed that age was negatively related to job strains and quitting intention, and positively related to job satisfaction. Furthermore, older managers reported fewer sources of stress, better control coping, and a more internal work locus of control. Multiple regression analyses suggested that relations of age with job satisfaction and well-being …

A Comparative Study Of Managerial Stress In Greater China : The Direct And Indirect Effects Of Coping Strategies And Work Locus Of Control, Oi-Ling Siu, Paul, E. Spector, Cary, L. Cooper
CAPS Working Paper Series
The present study aims at comparing the direct and indirect effects of coping strategies (control and support coping) and work locus of control (externality) on the stress-strain relationships among managers in Greater China (Peopled Republic of China [PRC], Hong Kong, and Taiwan) using the Occupational Stress Indicator (OSI). Self-administered survey method was employed to collect data from 249 (164 males, 85 females) managers in China, 280 (159 males, 120 females, 1 unclassified) managers in Hong Kong, and 347 (191 males, 151 females, 5 unclassified) managers in Taiwan. The direct and indirect effects of control coping, support coping, and locus of …
Personal Control And Organizational Coping Strategies Of Job Stress : Empirical Results From China, Oi Ling Siu, Jianhong Ma
Personal Control And Organizational Coping Strategies Of Job Stress : Empirical Results From China, Oi Ling Siu, Jianhong Ma
APIAS Working Paper 工作論文
The purpose of the present study is first to examine the relationship between organizational strategies and job stress, taking the assumption that personal control will mediate the underlying organizational strategies-job stress connection, and then to develop stress copings by recombining management with regard to their impact on personal control. Further, the role of educational level and types of jobs on job stress will also be examined.
Implementing Efficient Allocations In A Model Of Financial Intermediation, Edward J. Green
Implementing Efficient Allocations In A Model Of Financial Intermediation, Edward J. Green
Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series
In a nite-trader version of the Diamond and Dybvig (1983) model, the ex-ante efficient allocation is implementable by a direct mechanism (i.e., each trader announces the type of his own ex-post preference) in which truthful revelation is the strictly dominant strategy for each trader. When the model is modified by formalizing the sequential-service constraint (cf. Wallace, 1988), the truth-telling equilibrium implements the symmetric, ex-ante efficient allocation with respect to iterated elimination of strictly dominated strategies.
Health Care Delivery And Financing : In Search Of An Ideal Model - Reflections On The Harvard Report, Lok Sang Ho
Health Care Delivery And Financing : In Search Of An Ideal Model - Reflections On The Harvard Report, Lok Sang Ho
Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series
There are three models of health care delivery and financing: the market model, the professional model, and the bureaucracy-dominated model. The Hospital Authority in Hong Kong is essentially a professional model, but it is supplemented by the bureaucracy-dominated model (the Department of Health) and private suppliers. The Harvard consultants see such a system as fragmented and inefficient but their proposals place too much emphasis on the market and have ignored the peculiar nature of the health care market. Although some of the principles that they espouse, such as protection against excessive burden and prevention of moral hazard, are good and …
A Structural Equation Model Of Environmental Attitude And Behaviour : The Hong Kong Experience, Oi Ling Siu, Kui Yin Cheung
A Structural Equation Model Of Environmental Attitude And Behaviour : The Hong Kong Experience, Oi Ling Siu, Kui Yin Cheung
Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series
The present study aims at establishing a structural equation model relating affect, verbal commitment, and actual commitment using a sample of 271 university students (119 males, 152 females) by applying the theory of reasoned action (Aizen & Fishbein, 1980). A linear structural equation relation (LISREL) model was developed to verify that verbal commitment is a function of affect, and in tum, determine actual commitment. Sixty percent of the variance of verbal commitment could be explained by affect, and 19 % of actual commitment could be explained by verbal commitment; yet only a small percentage of the variance of actual commitment …
