English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
Humans destroy earth by polluting the atmosphere and wiping out other living things. Climate change is a human created problem that is increasing the rate at which the damage is occurring. The temperature is increasing at the fastest rate that it has in 10,000 years. With change happening this fast, it is hard for nature and animals, including ourselves, to adapt. Climate change is one of the biggest things causing this change and it is crucial to take action before it is too late. We need to stop deforestation, stop CO2 emissions, and stop the use of fossil fuels. The …

The trifecta of globalization, urbanization and digitization have created new opportunities and challenges across our nation, cities, boroughs and urban centers. Cities in particular are in a unique position at the center of commerce and technology becoming hubs for innovation and practical application of emerging technology. In this rapidly changing 24/7 digitized world, governments are leveraging innovation and technology to become more effective, efficient, transparent and to be able to better plan for and anticipate the needs of its citizens, businesses and community organizations. This class will provide the framework for how cities and communities can become smarter and more …
Investigating The Effects Of Student Debt On Career Outcomes: An Empirical Approach, Gideon Moore
Investigating The Effects Of Student Debt On Career Outcomes: An Empirical Approach, Gideon Moore
Honors Projects
High student debt has been hypothesized to affect career choice, causing students to desire stable, high paying jobs. To test this hypothesis, I rely on plausibly exogenous variation in debt due to a federal policy shift. In the summer of 2007, the Higher Education Reconciliation Act (or HERA) expanded the cap for federally subsidized student loans. I examine how variation in debt affects career choice and eventual salary of students using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 Child and Young Adult Cohort of students who were of college age during the implementation of the policy. I find …

Are Disaster Early Warnings Effective?, Kerri Worthington, Katina Michael, Peter Johnson, Paul Barnes
Professor Katina Michael
Australia's summer is traditionally a time of heightened preparation for natural disasters, with cyclones and floods menacing the north and bushfires a constant threat in the south. And the prospect of more frequent, and more intense, disasters thanks to climate change has brought the need for an effective early warning system to the forefront of policy-making. Technological advances and improved telecommunication systems have raised expectations that warning of disasters will come early enough to keep people safe. But are those expectations too high? Kerri Worthington reports. Increasingly, the world's governments -- and their citizens -- rely on technology-based early warning …

Concern People Without Latest Technology Will Miss Fire Warnings, Sally Sara, Ashley Hall, Peter Johnson, Katina Michael
Professor Katina Michael
But what if the website goes down in the way Victoria's Country Fire Authority website crashed as fires raged a few weeks ago? What about those people who don't own the latest technology? And what happens when the power goes out?
KATINA MICHAEL: Well there's no television, there isn't ability to access the internet potentially.
ASHLEY HALL: Professor Katina Michael is Associate Professor at the School of Information Systems and Technology at the University of Wollongong.
KATINA MICHAEL: I would suggest a long lasting powered radio because we don't want is we don't want when the lights go out, or …

On 06 Sep 2010, when Mr. [the Victim] was working in his clearance lane and excavated a detected signal, during the excavation drill his excavation tool touched the mine and caused it to go off. According to investigation report the cause of the accident was the wrong excavation technique, as he started excavation drill close to the pinpointing target. He had gone down and did not expand the trench to allow entry from the side, which caused to stroke his excavation tool on the top of the mine. Due to the injuries sustained on his eyes, it seems that the …

It is the conclusion of investigation team that the involved deminer was excavation a signal in an area where the ground surface was hard with dense vegetation, and considering the crater created as a result of the explosion it seems that the deminer was excavating the signal about 30 cm on right side of the working lane where he was not in a stable position for excavating the signal by scraper; the excavation of this lane required to be done in next clearance lane.

Details of this accident have been withheld by the demining NGO that employed the Victim. A spreadsheet including the Victim’s name and very brief details of the accident was made available in 2007. Some details can be inferred from the information released. For example, the limited injury implies that the victim’s PPE was being worn.

This accident occurred because the deminer activated a PROM mine, it is not possible to prove how the fuse was activated. In view of the fact that the deminers on the site were consistently exceeding established productivity rates by an excessively large amount, it is the view of the Board that the excessive operating speed was the major contributing factor.

The investigators determined that the deminer was "excavating" to investigate a detector reading when the accident occurred. He was using a shovel to do so. Investigators were unable to visit the accident site [due to deminer mobility and seasonal redeployment], so the report relied on interviews and written statements.

The investigators checked the Team's detectors and found five to be not "in proper working condition". The victim used one of these detectors. At the end of the working day the victim was taking his equipment to the store and either stepped into an uncleared area or stepped on a missed mine (due to the faulty detectors).

The Team Commander knew that there were mines present. "After thorough checking [he] had ordered the removal of 15cm of topsoil, followed by a second 15cm. The mine was still 15cm below the surface. This was too deep for the detector to pick it up and too deep for the prodder to reveal its presence… the ground compacted under his weight and set off the mine."

The investigators determined that the victim was squatting to prod with a bayonet and applied too much pressure. He used the presence of bamboo to explain why he squatted to prod. The mine was identified as a PMN from "found fragments". His visor was shattered in the accident and his bayonet was "lost".

An ex-pat deminer was checking the edge of “iron bomb of 16 inch Naval shell crater” in a minefield when he trod on a Type 72 anti-personnel mine. The mine has a minimum metal content and he suffered a traumatic amputation of his lower leg. It is presumed that he had his detector in his hand at the time of the accident.
