Mental Health Disorders In Later Life, Zvi Gellis, Bonnie Kenaley Mar 2016

Mental Health Disorders In Later Life, Zvi Gellis, Bonnie Kenaley

Bonnie Kenaley

Depression and anxiety disorders are common in older adults. These disorders are associated with impaired functioning, disability, and high service use and costs. Co-occurrence of depression and anxiety is common with chronic diseases. Effective psychological and pharmacological treatments are available. However, too often, depression and anxiety disorders are underdiagnosed or are not optimally treated. This chapter presents an update on the state of knowledge on depression and anxiety disorders in later life, focusing on prevalence, comorbidity, and effective evidence-based treatments.

When Traumatic Stressors Are Not Past, But Now: Psychosocial Treatment To Develop Resilience With Children And Youth Enduring Concurrent, Complex Trauma, Katherine Mccrea, Deanna Guthrie, Jeffrey Bulanda Dec 2015

When Traumatic Stressors Are Not Past, But Now: Psychosocial Treatment To Develop Resilience With Children And Youth Enduring Concurrent, Complex Trauma, Katherine Mccrea, Deanna Guthrie, Jeffrey Bulanda

Katherine Tyson McCrea

While providing school-based treatment for 450 urban impoverished children and youth from 2006-2014, we found implementing specific elements of PTSD treatment models reduced engagement and aggravated clients’ symptoms. Clients’ traumas were neither past nor single-type, but were multiple (complex) and unavoidably occurring concurrently with treatment, so we speculated that many trauma treatment elements needed revision to be effective. Using a participatory action research methodology, we developed a resilience-focused treatment model for concurrently-traumatized clients. Drawing from the strengths perspective, self-determination, and hope theories, key treatment elements revised here are triggers, re-enactment, avoidance, “silencing,” and dissociation. Treatment guidelines include creating a safe …

Measurements In Clinical Psychiatry, Amresh Srivastava Oct 2015

Measurements In Clinical Psychiatry, Amresh Srivastava

Amresh Srivastava

Measuring psychopathology is a modern and scientific development in clinical psychiatry. . This approach to psychological assessment is consistent with the principles of evidence-based medicine. Psychological assessment is, however, much more than just the data collected from psychometrically strong measures. This draft is prepared as per the requirements for developing standard of care in clinical practice in Parkwood hospital. In this draft we address some basic questions: • Is there a merit in introducing measurements in psychiatric practice in this institution? • Is it possible and feasible for patient care? Considering the first question, there is enough evidence that measurement …

An Introduction To Use Of Self In Field Placement, Heath Walters

Heath B. Walters

As the child welfare field coordinator at Lewis Clark State College, I have the honor of attending an annual child welfare conference where many of my students present their research on issues that affect child welfare in the State of Idaho. One of my duties at this conference is to introduce our institution's student presenters, which includes a quick description of their internship placements and a few positive notes on what I have enjoyed about supervising their field placements during the previous year. As I introduced one of my students this year, I praised the student regarding her unique ability …

This paper forms part of a panel presentation and discussion that re-evaluates the Summit Series from a more critical perspective than the nostalgic rhetoric of the recent, 2012, 40th anniversary of the event. This part of the panel presentation will examine this question: What factors have served to enshrine the Series to the Mythic and Mono-mythic Levels? Evidence utilized includes game-films from the series; the collective rhetoric of secondary sources such as 27 Days in Sept, Face Off at the Summit, Hockey Nite in Moscow, The Days Canada Stood Still, Hockey Showdown, and Shooting for Glory; film analysis such as …

Maybe It’S Right, Maybe It’S Wrong: Structural And Social Determinants Of Deception In Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Chris Horan, Philip Smith Dec 2012

Maybe It’S Right, Maybe It’S Wrong: Structural And Social Determinants Of Deception In Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Chris Horan, Philip Smith

Mara Olekalns

Context shapes negotiators’ actions, including their willingness to act unethically. Focusing on negotiators use of deception, we used a simulated two-party negotiation to test how three contextual variables - regulatory focus, power, and trustworthiness - interacted to shift negotiators’ ethical thresholds. We demonstrated that these three variables interact to either inhibit or activate deception, providing support for an interactionist model of ethical decision-making. Three patterns emerged from our analyses. First, low power inhibited and high power activated deception. Second, promotion-focused negotiators favored sins of omission whereas prevention-focused negotiators favored sins of commission. Third, low cognition-based trust influenced deception when negotiators …

Screech Owls: The Familia Of Roy Macgregor’S Narratives On Hockey, Don Morrow

Donald Morrow

Roy MacGregor is perhaps the most prolific of Canadian writers to use hockey as the subtext and text for his writing. His most well-known work, The Home Team: Fathers, Sons, and Hockey, succinctly, is an intimate portrait of the father-son bond in and through the game of hockey. More sweeping in national scope and significance of hockey is Home Game: Hockey and Life in Canada which MacGregor co-authored with hockey legend Ken Dryden. Least well known, though acclaimed by academics to be one of the very best novels on sport, is The Last Season. The latter is a poignant description …

The Seven Spices: Pumpkins, Puritans, And Pathogens In Colonial New England, Michael Sharbaugh Nov 2011

The Seven Spices: Pumpkins, Puritans, And Pathogens In Colonial New England, Michael Sharbaugh

Michael D Sharbaugh

Water sources in the United States' New England region are laden with arsenic. Particularly during North America's colonial period--prior to modern filtration processes--arsenic would make it into the colonists' drinking water. In this article, which evokes the biocultural evolution paradigm, it is argued that colonists offset health risks from the contaminant (arsenic poisoning) by ingesting copious amounts of seven spices--cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, cardamom, allspice, vanilla, and ginger. The inclusion of these spices in fall and winter recipes that hail from New England would therefore explain why many Americans associate them not only with the region, but with Thanksgiving and Christmas, …

Testing Cermak's Hypothesis: Is Dissociation The Mediating Variable That Links Substance Abuse In The Family Of Origin With Offspring Codependency?, Daniel Harkness Sep 2011

Testing Cermak's Hypothesis: Is Dissociation The Mediating Variable That Links Substance Abuse In The Family Of Origin With Offspring Codependency?, Daniel Harkness

Daniel Harkness

This is a pilot study of substance abuse in the family of origin and its relation to offspring dissociation and offspring codependency. Cermak contends that substance abuse in the family of origin exposes offspring to trauma, that exposure to trauma in the family of origin engenders offspring dissociation, and that dissociation is the process underlying offspring codependency. Assuming that substance abuse in the family of origin exposes offspring to trauma, this experiment tested the hypothesis that dissociation mediates the relationship between substance abuse in the family of origin and offspring codependency. Although it was found that substance abuse in the …

To Have And To Hold: Codependency As A Mediator Or Moderator Of The Relationship Between Substance Abuse In The Family Or Origin And Adult-Offspring Medical Problems, Daniel Harkness Sep 2011

To Have And To Hold: Codependency As A Mediator Or Moderator Of The Relationship Between Substance Abuse In The Family Or Origin And Adult-Offspring Medical Problems, Daniel Harkness

Daniel Harkness

This pilot study explored the putative role of codependency as a mediator or moderator of the relationship between substance abuse in the family of origin (SAFO) and offspring medical problems in a counterbalanced multiple-treatment experiment with a heterogenous sample of adult males and females. Codependent attitude and behavior were moderators that attenuated the relationship between SAFO and two measures of acute offspring medical problems, but codependent behavior amplified the relationship between SAFO and chronic medical problems. Challenging replications are called for.

The Development, Reliability, And Validity Of A Clinical Rating Scale For Codependency, Daniel Harkness, Melaney Swenson, Kathryn Madsen-Hampton, Richard Hale Sep 2011

The Development, Reliability, And Validity Of A Clinical Rating Scale For Codependency, Daniel Harkness, Melaney Swenson, Kathryn Madsen-Hampton, Richard Hale

Daniel Harkness

This investigation examined the reliability and validity if a rating scale for codependency in substance abuse treatment. The investigators developed an example-anchored rating scale to operationalize codependency as substance abuse counselors construe it in practice, and recruited 27 counselors for a counterbalanced multiple-treatment experiment. Counselors were randomly assigned to one of four continuing education workshops for rating-scale training, and asked to evaluate codependency in five videotaped cases. Semistructured case interviews were videotaped with a male and a female from five adult populations to vary the gender and codependency of cases: (1) outpatients in treatment for addiction, (2) outpatient spouses, (3) …
