This presentation at ENUG(ExLibris Users from the Northeast US) discussed several integrations that Binghamton University has accomplished in the 5 months since they went live. New Self Check system from Bintech replacing bibliotheca units. Integrating with the Banner system for Faculty, Student, and staff loads and exporting fines and fee information to Banner. Publishing to Google Scholar, OCLC and other systems to automate updating of content to these services. Also discussed was how to load content into Primo VE.

To jump-start the careers of graduate students and postdocs in the fields of engineering, math and the physical sciences, Cornell University Library held a free workshop, “Research From Start to Publish,” in January 2019. Librarians and guest faculty members led sessions on topics including intellectual property, writing/presentation skills, data management, and productivity tools. Faculty journal editors discussed how to get published, open access experts discussed “Why not Publish in arXiv and Be Done,” and librarians highlighted the wealth of library resources in the session “$2.5 Million-a-Year Worth of Information at Your Fingertips.”

In fall 2017, we initiated a migration of the University of Western Ontario’s 32 library-hosted journals from the bepress Digital Commons platform to the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. This was a response to concerns expressed by librarians and journal editors regarding potential implications of Elsevier’s August 2017 acquisition of bepress, including the possibility that Elsevier might place ads on their journal pages or increase fees for journal-hosting services. Our goal was to mitigate those concerns by ensuring that Western Libraries’ journal platform remained as open and community-driven as possible. Undergraduate biology students at St. John Fisher College have several opportunities to engage with the concept of Scholarly Publishing and consequently three different frames from the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education; Information Creation as a Process, Information Has Value, and Scholarship as Conversation. This is accomplished at three different points in the biology undergraduate curriculum. First, all students enrolled in general biology complete an exercise on open access, article processing charges, submission styles and other author instructions for several different publications. Many competing claims have been made about the time and expense of maintaining different discovery tools in the academic library setting. Analysis of traffic, visits, and views may be inadequate data to focus this discussion. Analysis of high impact referrals, those that lead directly to downloads and denials, is more meaningful. Downloads are an indicator of worth, as are denials. This brief session will outline what a major STM publisher looks for in the profile of the discovery layer of its academic clients.

Writing a thesis or dissertation is hard, and now that most theses and dissertations are deposited and distributed electronically, graduating students face an additional complication: they must decide whether they want to make their dissertations immediately open access (OA), or, at universities that require OA, they must come to terms with the fact that their work will be OA. In this presentation, I survey and scrutinize the anxieties and myths surrounding OA theses and dissertations.
