Queering The Library Of Congress, Carlos R. Fernandez Aug 2015

Queering The Library Of Congress, Carlos R. Fernandez

Works of the FIU Libraries

This poster will attempt to apply the techniques used in Queer Theory to explore library and information science’s use and misuse of library classification systems; and to examine how “queering” these philosophical categories can not only improve libraries, but also help change social constructs.

For millennia, philosophers, such as Plato and Aristotle, have used and expounded upon categories and systems of classification. Their purpose is to make research and the retrieval of information easier. Unfortunately, the rules used to categorize and catalog make information retrieval more challenging for some, due to social constructs such as heteronormality.

The importance of this …

Is There Value In Value-Added Cataloging?, Lauren Marshall, Mina Chercourt

Mina Chercourt

We discuss a project they conducted to identify whether adding table of contents and analytics to certain materials in the collection would increase circulation. They selected monographic series in the Q classification that were titled separately and five or six large series in the Ps for analyzing. The work resulted in significant increases in circulation of the materials ( anywhere from 59% to 186%). The work was labor intensive, but the increased use of the materials made it certainly worthwhile.

Resource Discoverability At The Crossroads, Cheryl D. Walters, Anne Diekema, Liz Woolcott

Cheryl D. Walters

The Internet is changing how people find and use information. Users increasingly are discovering relevant resources outside traditional library systems and expect immediate access to resources at the point of discovery. Abstract: Students at WPI must complete 2 projects during their academic career. Written project reports have been housed at the Gordon Library for many years, but never cataloged. A web interface with the existing database allows limited searching. A stand-alone Macro recording program was used to transfer the data from MS Access into MARC records in our Voyager online catalog.
