This presentation describes the development and evolution of the Scholarly Communication and Open Access Publishing course in the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program at Western University. The course has been offered as an online elective once a year since 2018, and its initial impetus was to provide a sustainable peer review model for the MLIS student-run journal Emerging Library & Information Perspectives (ELIP). Students in the class are tasked with peer reviewing submissions and providing additional quality control during the production process, but the journal complements the curriculum, as opposed to driving it. In fall 2017, we initiated a migration of the University of Western Ontario’s 32 library-hosted journals from the bepress Digital Commons platform to the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. This was a response to concerns expressed by librarians and journal editors regarding potential implications of Elsevier’s August 2017 acquisition of bepress, including the possibility that Elsevier might place ads on their journal pages or increase fees for journal-hosting services. Our goal was to mitigate those concerns by ensuring that Western Libraries’ journal platform remained as open and community-driven as possible. Humanities researchers consider the library to be their laboratory, and its print collections their essential research equipment. In spite of anecdotal evidence that both students and faculty in the Humanities prefer print materials over e-books, academic libraries are allocating a steadily increasing proportion of their acquisitions budgets toward the purchase of e-books across all disciplines.

At Western University in London, Ontario, Peggy Ellis and Fran Gray surveyed Arts & Humanities faculty members and graduate students to gain a better understanding of their attitudes toward e-books. Researchers are often asked to demonstrate their productivity and the impact of their research when they apply for funding, as well as when they go up for promotion and tenure. One of the ways they do this is by using traditional bibliometrics. Librarians, publishers, and institutions are other stakeholders with sometimes widely varying use cases for research impact metrics. Unfortunately, some traditional research impact metrics have been identified as barriers to open access initiatives, including Scholarship@Western.

Kevin Tanner addresses the importance of professional identity in librarianship. In the Summer 2015 semester, he completed an independent study on the construction of professional identity of librarians on Twitter through professional development and networking. During this session, he shares the results of that study and give suggestions on how you can begin to find your own professional identity while still retaining your individuality. While there are many stereotypes about librarians, they are not “one-size-fits-all” professionals, and a new modern image of the professional has begun to emerge in the digital age through a thoughtful reflection on identity.

Western Libraries, an academic library with an FTE of 34,000, and Ingram Coutts, have worked together to implement an e-preferred Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA) program at Western Libraries. This implementation has required collaboration between Coutts and Western Libraries collection librarians to develop effective profiles. These profiles allow the PDA collection to be filtered according to subject and non-subject parameters.

There are several aspects of this project that make it unique. First, every e-book that is selected by a PDA-preferred profile will automatically be loaded into the catalogue for PDA. Patrons will trigger a purchase if the book is accessed twice. …
