As recent political events across the globe have shed a light on the fragility of democratic values, the role of the University in creating a framework for civic education becomes more urgent. Informed, caring and engaged citizenry must be a goal of higher education. Students currently face the emergence of faulty types of information - such as misinformation and disinformation, which undermines the notion of collective or public inquiry, not only within universities, but also within society as a whole. This challenge must be acknowledged and addressed by academic institutions.

Universal design for learning is a framework that can be utilized to support inclusive instructional practices in a hybrid learning environment. This presentation will discuss how UDL techniques can be used to promote information literacy learning for students in a variety of learning settings including face to face, synchronous virtual instruction, and asynchronous instructional learning objects. These techniques can be used to better support students where and when they are. Attendees will leave with practical knowledge of UDL techniques and how to use them for teaching information literacy to students in a variety of settings.

ABSTRACT
In 2012, at the World Open Educational Resources Congress in Paris, UNESCO declared that governments within their powers should develop strategies and policies that promote open educational resources (OER) as an avenue toward the universal right of equity of access to education. Though OER has increased exponentially in availability since that time, there remain confounding factors that act as barriers to OER adoption, such as ease of discovery, ease of adaptability and re-use, and uncertainty regarding quality and sustainability. Today's students need to locate, use and share information in myriad formats; they need to be ICT (information and communication technology) literacy. The CSU system has started an ICT Literacy Initiative to build out the MERLOT collection of ICT literacy learning objects, and to help faculty integrate ICT literacy into their curricula. This session explains ICT literacy, especially in terms of new standards. Attendees will find out how MERLOT supports ICT literacy, and how they can join and contribute to the ICT literacy community.

From June 2010 until the present, a suite of online reusable learning objects (RLOs) has been created at the Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT Dublin) library covering a range of information literacy (IL) competencies. These RLOs have helped to facilitate student transition from second to third level, advance IL and enrich the student learning experience. The paper outlines the development of these resources, how these learning objects have been integrated into academic modules at ITT Dublin and how they have been shared and reused as open educational resources at national and international level. New Wine Into Old Wineskins?: Adding The Visual To Information Literacy Instruction, Carol Leibiger, Alan Aldrich

Images are significant information carriers in new technologies. Scrutinizing the written word ignores communication work done by images. Intermediality, or information literacy understood as metaliteracy, suggests ways to assess images using many of the same criteria for evaluating verbal content, with added visual-literacy criteria. The presenters combine visual and textual literacy into a holistic critical-thinking approach, which enriches interpretation when learners apply rigorous rhetorical criteria to texts, regardless of their media. Suggestions for such instruction will be provided in a LibGuide.

Presentation given at the 2009 LITA National Forum in Salt Lake City, Utah on archiving OpenCourseWare in the Institutional Repository.
The main function of OpenCourseWare is to provide open access to collections of educational materials used in formal courses. The main function of an Institutional Repository is to collect, preserve, and disseminate intellectual output of an institution. Since OCW is a significant portion of the intellectual output of a university, archiving OCW in an institutions repository seems a perfect marriage of means and opportunity.

Student response systems (clickers) offer the potential for student engagement and active learning in the classroom. Use of the technology can also help instructors identify areas of uncertainty and use student feedback to customize lectures. Earlier identification of problem areas for both student and instructor should lead to more efficient and effective use of class time and better learning outcomes. This presentation covers best practices in the use of clickers in introductory statistics and principles of managerial finance classes.
