Blind Fighter is a video game made to be playable by anyone, regardless of any visual impairments the player may have. The game relies on auditory queues to allow players to understand what is happening in the game without ever having to see the screen. The project’s goal is to serve as a proof of concept that video games can be made inclusive with a few additions during development, without sacrificing overall quality. Archives & Distinctive Collections at the College of the Holy Cross is digitizing key components of the Deaf Catholic Archives. This presentation introduces this hidden collection and describes workflows to address such complex issues as content selection, privacy, and permissions while incorporating the nuances of Deaf culture in all processes.

Families who reside in rural communities and live in poverty often experience a lack of quality of life supports, which impacts their mental health and exasperates any special needs they may have. Research in regards to these concerns, has historically focused on southern states and or the impacts of poverty in urban settings. This phenomenological qualitative research study reveals quality of life supports that impoverished families living in rural communities in Central Illinois often do without. School-based occupational therapists support academic success within and outside the classroom through accommodations/strategies and modifications to student’s class environment. Children with learning disabilities face a variety of occupational challenges in school including completing class assignments, following school routines, tolerating unexpected/expected sounds, and developing/maintaining friendships. The purpose of this capstone experience was to gain clinical skills for school-based occupational therapy and to develop academic, social, and life skills lessons for children with learning disabilities as well as a parent newsletter with carryover activities and strategies. This study focused on women in leadership, and if weight was a consideration in their selection of a protégé. Two races were represented, Black and White, and five age groups (Total n = 87). A mixed methodology study was conducted to evaluate the data. Participants were asked to name traits deemed important for a mentee. The adjectives were quantified, themed and coded. A Fisher’s Exact Test was conducted to test the relationship between the themed word selection by race and by age. The Weight Implicit Association Test (IAT) was administered to capture implicit and explicit scores regarding weight. The range …

As a result of changing laws designed to create access to higher education, an increasing number of individuals with disabilities are attending college. However, post-secondary outcomes of individuals with disabilities continue to lag behind their non-disabled peers. While there is research on the needs of students with disabilities once in college, we know little about the social factors shaping their decisions to attend college. Likewise, over the past two decades, there has been a growing prevalence of adoptive families, including adoptions across racial/ethnic groups. Individuals with disabilities of all kinds experience discrimination and stigma as they go about their lives; ableism, the systemic discrimination against people with disabilities, is rampant across many cultures. These negative attitudes towards disability manifest in many different ways, from denying people with disabilities agency over their bodies to refusing to provide public spaces they can safely navigate.
