This study was performed by economic development student Kirby Date, who is also a professional planner and coordinator of the Community Planning Program at the Levin College. In addition to the market study, a downtown survey of visitors and residents, …

Conceptual Framework For Using Gis In Building Community Capital Towards Sustainability, Sungsoon Hwang
Conceptual Framework For Using Gis In Building Community Capital Towards Sustainability, Sungsoon Hwang
Sungsoon Hwang
Sustainability—balancing fundamental human needs with ecological resilience—has been embraced as an overarching policy goal. And communities have been called to participate in the process of attaining that ideal. Community-based organizations (CBOs) can benefit from using GIS in building community assets and developing sustainability initiatives. However, GIS, has not been used widely for these purposes in CBOs yet. In this chapter, I illustrate how geographic information (such as maps) can be useful in community development drawing from community GIS projects, and explain how theories of sustainability and spatial thinking can be utilized in community-based efforts towards sustainability. CBOs can monitor and …

Office of Community Partnerships Posters
Through a 5 year grant, the Center for Social Policy (CSP) serves as a strategic learning and evaluation partner to The Boston Foundation (TBF). TBF’s investment and people and place-based initiatives seek to make sustainable, positive change through community and economic development in neighborhoods along the Fairmount-Indigo transit line in Boston. From 2010-2012, the Center team worked closely with Mattapan United and Millennium 10 (in Codman Square/Four Corners) to identify community priorities for neighborhood change. From 2013-2015, the Center team is evaluating these neighborhood change efforts, as well as other initiatives aimed at increasing economic well-being for neighborhood residents. The …

If You Rebuild It, They Might Not Come Brad Pitt's Beautiful Houses Are A Drag On New Orleans, Lydia Depillis

"There's a reason, though, why such cold, hard logic hasn't yet prevailed in this most hard hit of New Orleans neighborhoods: It's all too easy to be won over by the spirit of the Lower Ninth, the passion of the people who did return. It may not be the most efficient use of public resources, and no amount of trying may bring in the kind of retail amenities that make places comfortable to live. Lower Niners, however, have a different kind of attachment to their ancestral land—for the black families who've lived there for decades, it's often the first property …

WhoData.org, a community-focused public participation geographic information project, aims to share data that academic, public, private and non-profit organizations can use to assess, monitor and manage quality of life issues. WhoData empowers resident-led, non-profit or communityfocused groups, primarily in New Orleans, with training and resources to map and analyze data they collect on neighborhood conditions and trends. The community data information system, www.whodata.org, houses the results of property condition surveys. Residents are able to highlight priority properties that reflect indicators of blight, create customized maps and export property lists to share with the public and municipal leaders. Neighborhood profile reports, …

January, 2011, I joined the 123 rd group of Peace Corps volunteers heading for Thailand, becoming one over 5,000 volunteers who have served in that nation. Thailand is one of the longest continuously running programs in Peace Corps history. Through Corps' relationship with the kingdom, the goals and objectives for various programs have shifted and changed. I served in one of the last groups under Community -Based Organizational Development (CBOD) project framework. This program was itself a result of Thailand’s 1997 constitution that stressed de -centralization of the gov ernment's functions. Volunteers in this program were assigned to a subdistrict …

From Capability Trap To Capacity Development : Understanding Local Capacity For Managing Disasters, Asmita Tiwari
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The concept of capacity development is essential to the idea of governance and development. Over the decades, governments and development agencies have promoted capacity development programs. With the increasing number of disaster events and associated losses, there has been heightened attention given to governments' capacity to manage disasters. This is associated with a paradigm shift from reactive to proactive actions. Prevention requires capacity to understand, reduce, and manage risk. Nevertheless, a universally acceptable overarching framework of capacity development does not exist.

This video spotlights the continual efforts of Associated Neighborhood Development and other local organizations towards the development of the Hoffman Triangle neighborhood in Central City. The summer of 2012 brought significant advancements to Hoffman Triangle through three community-organized cleanup events, led by the Hoffman Triangle Neighborhood Association and the City of New Orleans. Maps and resources produced by Whodata.org and the University of New Orleans Department of Planning & Urban Studies have assisted efforts in highlighting why Hoffman Triangle remains a great place to live, work and play. There is an immense variety of privately owned businesses. They will be stakeholders because their businesses are located there, but they will also be assets in themselves in drawing people to the area. There is basically everything anyone could possible want or need in this area. There are two gas stations, a Family Dollar, a liquor store, a few sit down restaurants, numerous places where one can get a quick bite to eat, a frame shop, a clothing store, a pawn shop, a store with fresh produce (which is hard to find in urban areas), a store that sells sports …

Razing Lafitte: Defending Public Housing From A Hostile State, Leigh Graham
Publications and Research
The contentious politics of the demolition of Lafitte public housing in post- Katrina New Orleans and its replacement with mixed-income properties is a telling case of the strategic conflicts housing advocates face in public housing revitalization. It reveals how the qualified outcomes of HOPE VI interact with local institutional and historical circumstances to confound the equity and social justice goals of housing and community development advocates. It shows the limits to public housing revitalization as an urban recovery strategy when hostile government leadership characterizes a region, and the state is recast as an adversary rather than revitalization partner. This case …
