This study examined Northampton’s downtown redevelopment over the past two decades in order to draw out lessons for other Massachusetts towns and cities. The study used a number of methods: Interviewing key informants; tracing downtown redevelopment through city records and newspaper searches; analyzing commuting patterns into and out of the city; examining data on new businesses and compiling an inventory of lesbian and gay businesses, organizations and events

The purpose of this survey was two-fold: to determine interest among university and town planners in participating in the proposed conference and to assess the nature of current relationships between the two entities.

Examining The Role Of Economic Opportunity And Amenities In Explaining Population Redistribution, Peter R. Mueser, Philip E. Graves

This paper develops a model of migration integrating equilibrium and disequilibrium components in which individuals and firms form rational expectations about future opportunities. Levels of migration are derived as functions of variations in factors influencing migrant labor demand ("economic opportunity") and migrant labor supply ("residential amenities"). The model is used to estimate the extent to which migration in the United States over the period 1950-1980 is determined by these two classes of exogenous factors.

From December 1994 through March 1995, the D2T2M consulting group took a serious look at the future of Civic Stadium and its position in the regional community. This study was prepared for the Portland Metropolitan Sports Authority.

In an effort to develop a series of alternative scenarios on the future of Civic Stadium the group conducted an exhaustive series of interviews and a national data search. These interviews included financial experts, event promoters, current tenants, city and regional officials, stadium experts, concerned citizens and others.

Pretrial release (PTR) is the permanent or temporary freedom from incarceration for criminal defendants awaiting adjudication of their cases in court. From Anglo Saxon times in England, people accused of non-capital crimes were generally permitted to remain free until judicial officials could hear the charges against them. In America, pretrial release has been advocated by the courts since the colonial era. The U. S. Constitution requires that bail not be excessive, but leaves governments free to decide how bail laws are administered. This thesis reports on the results of a survey sent by the author to 148 local and regional planning agencies in Virginia. The mail survey of all Virginia county, city, town, and regional planning agencies showed that computers have been widely accepted and integrated into the planning workplace. Smaller agencies, and those with greater budgetary constraints have yet to realize the computer's full potential, however. The survey yielded an %84.5 total response rate, and covered hardware, software, organization and personnel, and effectiveness issues. It was based upon a similar survey administered in Arizona, New Mexico, and California five years ago. …
