This report is an update to a techno-economic feasibility study undertaken in 2018 to examine the efficacy of building and operating a microgrid in Downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Many factors have changed since 2018, including the 2022 passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, pursuant to which significant tax credits will make microgrids and grid edge technology adoption more attractive. Such a microgrid could offer enhanced resiliency and uptime to customers at prices that are competitive with existing rates for commercial power within the local investor owned utility’s service area. The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD), the largest conservancy district in Ohio, initiated a significant, multi-year capital improvement plan in 2014 in response to increasing revenues associated with Utica Shale development. This study used input-output analysis to estimate the regional economic impact of MWCD’s spending on infrastructure improvements and related operations from 2014 through 2022. Cleveland State University’s Energy Policy Center found that MWCD’s $182.1 million in capital spending during the study period resulted in $486.8 million of gross output (total economic activity of all sales/revenues), $221.9 million of value added (gross output minus intermediate inputs), $135.6 million in labor …

As United States looks to decarbonize its energy systems, there is likely to be a surge in interest in multi-customer District Energy. Interest in networked thermal will be especially high for low-income neighborhoods, which have been targeted by the Inflation Reduction Act for clean energy development. In northern climates, many such areas have no air conditioning, and residents are increasingly at risk with the intensity and duration of hot weather resulting from climate change. Glenn Research Center, located in Cleveland and Sandusky, Ohio, continues to create vast economic benefits within the regional economies of Northeast Ohio and Ohio by employing local labor, paying high wages to their employees who spend most of their income locally, engaging local contractors, and collaborating with local higher education institutions, providing them with research grants and contracts. Middle Neighborhoods (MNs) are generally recognized for their safety, stability and affordability for residents. They also provide an important opportunity to give lower-income populations access to affordable housing and an overall higher quality of life, but the number of MNs is declining throughout the U.S. Recognizing these opportunities and challenges regarding MNs, the research team set out to fill in the existing knowledge gaps about which public policies and programmatic activities are effective at 1) stabilizing MNs and 2) providing equitable access for lower-income and marginalized populations to join and stay in MNs.

Ewing Kauffman Foundation exploring the strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in three major entrepreneurial ecosystems across Ohio- Cleveland, Toledo, and Dayton. This initial report focuses strictly on effects felt throughout the city of East Palestine, with special attention paid to the evacuation area, and covers the period from the date of the derailment until two weeks afterward (through February 17, 2023). FRONT International Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art 2022 public art exhibit ran from July 16 through October 2, 2022. The FRONT exhibit takes place every three years and this iteration, Oh, Gods of Dust and Rainbows, was displayed in Cleveland and Akron, OH at a variety of locations through partnerships with museums and other institutions in the region.
