Expansion Of Golf Courses In The United States, Darrell Napton, Chris Laingen Jan 2008

Expansion Of Golf Courses In The United States, Darrell Napton, Chris Laingen

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Twenty-five million Americans play golf on the nation's 16,000 courses each year. These golf courses constitute a significant national landscape feature. Since 18789, when the game arrived in the United States, golf has filtered down the urban, economic, and social hierarchies to become accepted by and accessible to most Americans. During the ensuing thirteen decades the number, location, and layout of the nation's golf courses have responded to many of the same driving forces that impacted the nation, including decentralization, growth of the middle class, war, economic depression, suburbanization, and the increasing role of the federal government. Four epochs of …

Determining The Optimum Angle Of Release In The Shot-Put Event, Andreas Maheras Jan 2008

Determining The Optimum Angle Of Release In The Shot-Put Event, Andreas Maheras

Track and Field Faculty Publications

The objective of the shot-put action is to throw a 7.26 kg ball as far as possible, while following the rules that govern the event. The range of the shot is determined by its conditions at release, e.g., the velocity, height, horizontal distance (distance in front or behind the circle), and angle of release. Changes in the velocity of release will affect the distance thrown more than equal changes in either the angle or height of release (Gregor, McCoy, & Whiting, 1990; Hay, 1985).

Developing A New Curriculum In Sport Security Management, Stacey A. Hall, Rosalie Ward, Trey Cunningham, Lou Marciani Jan 2008

Developing A New Curriculum In Sport Security Management, Stacey A. Hall, Rosalie Ward, Trey Cunningham, Lou Marciani

Faculty Publications

High profile sporting events in the United States have been identified by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as potential terrorist targets (Lipton, 2005). However, there has been an identified lack of training and education for key personnel responsible for sport security operations (Cunningham, 2007). Recognizing the demand and need for a specialized area in sport event security management, the University of Southern Mississippi School of Human Performance and Recreation developed an emphasis area in sports event security management as part of the Master of Science in Sport Management program. The sport security emphasis area includes three graduate level courses …

The Invisible Pregnant Athlete And The Promise Of Title Ix, Deborah Brake Jan 2008

The Invisible Pregnant Athlete And The Promise Of Title Ix, Deborah Brake

Articles

The question of how law should respond to women who become pregnant, and whether to specially accommodate pregnancy or analogize it to other conditions, features prominently in virtually every area of sex equality law. In debates over women's equality in the workplace, for example, it has been the defining issue for the development of and debate over various models of equality in feminist legal theory. Until recently, however, the issue has been all but absent in debates and discussion about Title IX and its promise of sex equality in sports. This changed suddenly in 2007, when ESPN televised a program …

The Heart Of The Game: Putting Race And Educational Equity At The Center Of Title Ix, Deborah L. Brake, Verna L. Williams

Articles

This article examines how race and educational equity issues shape women's sports experiences, building upon the narrative of Darnellia Russell, a high school basketball player profiled in the documentary The Heart of the Game. Darnellia is a star player who, because of an unintended pregnancy, has to fight to play the game she loves.

This girl's story provides a unique and underutilized lens through which to examine gender and athletics, as well as evaluate the legal framework for gender equality in sport. In focusing on this narrative, we seek to give voice to black female athletes and to express their …
