During the 1982-83 school year, the U.S . Department of Education released the report of the President's Commission on Excellence in Education. The report concluded that American education had deteriorated until there was "A Nation at Risk." The writer had also taken note of the fact that on international comparisons, American students were far behind Japanese in the areas of mathematics and in the sciences. The Center for Applied Urban Research (CAUR) continued to provide research, technical assistance, and training services to state and local governments, foundations, and nonprofit organizations during fiscal year 1985. The CAUR continued to be involved in international research activity through the Omaha-Manila Applied Projects Program. Nebraska communities that received CAUR assistance include: Omaha, Lincoln, Scottsbluff, Nebraska City, Wayne, Gothenburg, Chadron, Alliance, and LaVista. State agencies served include: the Commission on Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, the Department of Social Services, and the Department of Health. The natural resources of the Niagara Region of Ontario have played an important role in the success of the tourist industry in the region. The Niagara Region has been developed on an industrial and agricultural base since the nineteenth century. Due to conflicting demands of the manufacturing, agricultural and tourism industries for aesthetic, recreational and waste disposal purposes, the physical environment has deteriorated. The research problem of this thesis is to determine the extent of the effect of this deteriorated environment upon the tourist industry in the Niagara Region.

Sites become places when people bestow meaning, such as sanctity, upon them. Throughout human history, sacred places have continually emerged within cultural groups. Sacred places commonly focus on heroic figures. A pilgrimage is the visible expression of the sanctity of a place. This thesis examines the motives, meanings and experiences which are associated with the journey to Elvis Presley’s Graceland mansion and grave in Memphis, Tennessee.

Data came from questioning 209 people visiting Presley’s home in the summer of 1984, from fan clubs around the world, and from personal interviews with key figures in Memphis. In my analysis of the …

Effect Of Sex-Biased And Sex-Fair Item Selections On Interest Inventory Results, Christine Elizabeth Franklin-Panek

The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which sex-biased items on an interest inventory stereotype the occupational interests by gender. Subjects were 194 eighth through twelfth grade students in rural, central Illinois public schools. A representative sample of students were administered a survey to determine which of these selection items depicted activities and occupations most commonly associated with males, females or both genders equally. Next, the interest inventory was revised to include only sex-fair terms.

Significant differences in occupational interests were found between males and females on the pretest using sex-biased selection items, with 73.3% of …

In an effort to obtain careers that are competitive, with advancement opportunities, persons identified as visually impaired have been blocked by attitudinal barriers of society. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of employer attitudes on employment opportunities for persons who are visually impaired in competition with individuals who are sighted. The population surveyed was a group of 200 employers of accountants field in the state of Illinois. The study was conducted using a questionnaire and a set of eight resumes of fictional individuals.
