Geographic Background Report No. 01: Omaha's Agricultural Core Region, Harold J. Retallick, Charles R. Gildersleeve

Publications

One of the critical problems in the delineation of the Omaha Trade Area to be solved by the geographer is the selection of the agricultural hinterland of Omaha. A series of maps, based on the 1959 and 1964 Census of Agriculture reports were developed. These basic maps were correlated with known data concerning agricultural shipments to the Omaha market. The result was the definition of an agricultural core region centered on Omaha.

Omaha Trade Area Study No. 02: An Analysis Of Telephone Calls, Newspaper Circulation, And Correspondent Banks, Harold J. Retallick, Charles R. Gildersleeve

Publications

There are many limitations and statistical uncertainties in making a full interpretation of the Omaha Trade Area, but we plan to go as far as we can to bring together the commonly used indicators that show the sphere of influence of a major trade center. A number of indicators, such as retail sales, newspaper circulation, correspondent banks, grain shipments, etc., will be mapped individually. Then, for the final analysis, a composite map will be constructed to show the area of overall dominance by Omaha.

Socialization To The Parental Role: A Study Of Reactive Norms, Don Stanley Ecklund Jul 1967

Socialization To The Parental Role: A Study Of Reactive Norms, Don Stanley Ecklund

Student Work

The interplay of social theory and social research is the most important attribute of the present day scientific study of human behavior. On the one hand, the scientist as theorist is interested in generalizations, and on the other hand, as a researcher he is interested in testing his hypothesis so that he is assured that what he reports is empirically valid. The effective social scientist does not aim to be strictly a theorist or an empiricist, but seeks to meaningfully combine both theory and research in a way that enhances scientific knowledge. In the following pages of this thesis, such …

Religious Preference And Worldly Success: A Comparison Of Protestants And Catholics, James W. Crowley Jun 1967

Religious Preference And Worldly Success: A Comparison Of Protestants And Catholics, James W. Crowley

Student Work

The problem, of theory construction toward a sociological understanding of the religious-economic relationship has relied to a great extent upon the work of a German social scientist, Max Weber.1 Historical observations made by Weber, which described a meaningful relationship between Protestantism and modern industrial capitalism,2 stimulated scholars from a number of fields to continue investigation of this relationship. The Weberian thesis advanced the position that religious and economic phenomena within a society were mutually interdependent. More specifically, Weber was concerned with the 'economic ethics of a religion'3 in relation to the economic institution. This relationship was considered …

An Odontometric Study Of Five Contemporary Western United States Indian And Alaskan Eskimo Groups, John A. Matis

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The morphologic characteristics of the oral cavity in five contemporary Western Indian and Alaskan Eskimo groups have been investigated by the use of study models of the dental archs. The sample consisted of 216 individuals, including 44 Navajos, 43 Apaches, 40 Papagos, 42 Pimas and 47 Alaskan Eskimos.

The first purpose of the study was to determine the extent of investigator error. This was accomplished by remeasuring many morphologic traits of the dentition in 125 Indians which had previously been measured by different investigators using the same study models. It was found that investigator error can be significant, even in …

Aspects Of Fit In A Formal Organization:Differential Attitudes Of Air Force Rotc Cadets., Helen Rose Potter May 1967

Aspects Of Fit In A Formal Organization:Differential Attitudes Of Air Force Rotc Cadets., Helen Rose Potter

Sociology ETDs

The Problem

In a formal organization, what determines who stays in and who drops out? The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that the closer the “fit”, the less likelihood that members will drop out. The concept of “fit” and “non-fit” is not a conception of a simple dichotomy but of degrees and kinds of “fit” and “non-fit.” With this in mind, then, the research in this study is focused on an exploration of sub-cultural variations ; that is, sub-cultures that are more less congruent with a given set of role expectations.
