Differences in work customs, educational traditions, recreational interests, neighborhood persistence, religious beliefs, agricultural practices, thrift and frugality, progressive tendencies, and other activities and attitudes can be partially explained by variations in nationality background. This study was made possible through the cooperation of the State work Projects Administration and the South Dakota Agricultural experiment Station. The project is officially designed as W .P.A. During 1938 certain social and economic information was secured for each farm operator in Brule County. This information was entered on a standardized schedule designated as form SS-1-A. For families who had applied for Farm Security grants, this information was secured from grant applications on file in the local Farm Security office. For families who had not applied for Farm Security assistance this information was secured from a variety of sources including: assessors' listing sheets in the Auditors office; birth records in the Clerk of Courts office; school census and teachers reports in the Superintendent of Schools office; and public …

He seldom traveled more than three or four miles a distance commonly known as a "team haul.” In recent years, improved transportation facilities have permitted farm families to go to the village for an increasing proportion of their goods and services. Aurora County, with a total of 80 rural schools, had closed 37.4 percent of those schools by 1940. At this date nine were operating with five or fewer pupils. Operation of schools for ten or fewer pupils is excessively expensive on an instructional cost-per-pupil basis. During recent years the following significant changes have occurred in the composition and distribution of population in Sully county: the total population has declined; the proportion in the younger age groups has decreased while the proportion in the older age groups has increased; the sex ratio has become more nearly equal; the percentage or foreign born has decreased; the birth rate has been sharply curtailed; and tenancy has increased. Some of these changes have come about as adjustments to changing social and economic conditions.
