While many studies have focused on disparities in employment and earnings of African Americans and Hispanics compared to white workers in the Milwaukee labor force, these reports have not drilled down to a neighborhood or jobsite level where changes can be effected in recruitment, hiring and promotion decisions. This report uses place-of-work data from the 2000 U.S. Census, released in 2004 and 2005 and designed for transportation planners, to assess and compare employment patterns by race/ethnicity at the census tract and block group and by industry, occupation, and type of employer. Employment Patterns Of Larger Milwaukee Area Companies: Occupational Shifts, Job Expansion And Progress Toward Diversity, Lois M. Quinn

This report examines the employment patterns of private companies in the Milwaukee metropolitan area with 100 or more employees, utilizing computerized summaries of EEO-l annual reports filed with the U.S. Equal Opportunities Employment Commission. Each year these companies are required to report on their total labor force, minorities and women employed by nine occupational groupings. The data are provided to identify occupational shifts, progress toward a diversified labor force and challenges facing Milwaukee area employers and workers. A critical challenge facing public policy makers and human resource planners is how to utilize the full potential of the Milwaukee area workforce. This report provides a comprehensive description of the metropolitan labor force to assist employers in planning for their companies and establishes benchmarks to assess employment and hiring patterns in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Detailed tables are provided on the labor pool of workers by occupational titles, the employment of workers by industry, and the current utilization of women and minorities in the Milwaukee labor force.
