Intellectual Capital In Churches: Matching Solution Complexity With Problem Complexity, Darin Freeburg Jan 2016

Intellectual Capital In Churches: Matching Solution Complexity With Problem Complexity, Darin Freeburg

Faculty Publications

The problems organizations face have varying degrees of complexity. What is not often understood, however, is that the knowledge needed to solve these problems also varies in complexity, and should match the complexity of the problem itself. The current study provides grounded theory for how leaders in churches should approach problems relating to Intellectual Capital (IC) assets. These intangible assets are crucial to the ability of churches to create value that enriches the lives of individuals in their communities. In two, 90-minute focus groups, the leadership team of a United Methodist Church in South Carolina, USA was asked about their …

The Process Of Religious And Political Rapprochement Between Bulgaria And Yugoslavia In 1920s And 1930s - An International Ecumenical Perspective, Priit Rohtmets, Radmila Radić

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

This article addresses the role of the ecumenical organization, the World Alliance for Promoting International Friendship through the Churches, in the complicated process of religious and political rapprochement between Bulgaria and Yugoslavia in the 1920s and 1930s. It argues that the Bulgarian and Yugoslav National Committees of the World Alliance formed a diplomatic channel for tackling the problems between the two countries, predominantly the question of Macedonia, but ultimately the rapprochement process between the two countries failed due to the outbreak of World War II.

Antithetical Commentaries On X, Y And The Disruption Of Being, Eva Rocha Jan 2016

Antithetical Commentaries On X, Y And The Disruption Of Being, Eva Rocha

Theses and Dissertations

Through discursive essays and poetic narrative, Antithetical Commentaries on X, Y and the Disruption of Being explores the tenuous relationship between modes of measurement and the struggle for human relevance in the post-contemporary digital age. In the introductory essay, “Not the Feather, but the Bird”, I give an overview of the inherent problems of object-oriented ontology, and how it relates to aesthetics and social issues of our times. In the Developmental Overview, I detail how I developed my installation approach and techniques, particularly with regard to the three-way dynamic of the artist:work:viewer relationship and how it can encourage …

Faith In A Changing Planet: The Role Of Religious Leaders In The Fight For A Livable Climate, Morissa Zuckerman Jan 2016

Faith In A Changing Planet: The Role Of Religious Leaders In The Fight For A Livable Climate, Morissa Zuckerman

Pitzer Senior Theses

Progressive religious leaders are playing an increasingly important role in the effort to combat climate change. Through a combination of unstructured in-depth interviews and primary source analysis, this thesis highlights nine U.S. religious leaders from various denominations of Christianity, Judaism and Islam who are actively involved in working on climate issues. Drawing on literature in social movement theory, I explore how clergy are uniquely influential in climate issues because of the organizational advantage and moral authority they hold through their positions as religious leaders, granting them the ability to highlight social justice implications of climate change with distinctive legitimacy. Clergy …

Causes And Consequences Of The Protestant Reformation, Sascha O. Becker, Steven Pfaff, Jared Rubin Jan 2016

Causes And Consequences Of The Protestant Reformation, Sascha O. Becker, Steven Pfaff, Jared Rubin

ESI Working Papers

The Protestant Reformation is one of the defining events of the last millennium. Nearly 500 years after the Reformation, its causes and consequences have seen a renewed interest in the social sciences. Research in economics, sociology, and political science increasingly uses detailed individual-level, city-level, and regional-level data to identify drivers of the adoption of the Reformation, its diffusion pattern, and its socioeconomic consequences. This survey takes stock of the research so far, tries to point out what we know and what we do not know, and which are the most promising areas for future research.

Indian Women’S Uplift Movements And The Dangers Of Cultural Imperialism, Hannah K. Griggs Jan 2016

Indian Women’S Uplift Movements And The Dangers Of Cultural Imperialism, Hannah K. Griggs

Audre Lorde Writing Prize

Because women encounter unique geographic, social, political, religious, economic, and temporal conditions, applying the particular agendas of traditional western feminism to countries like India can easily become a form of cultural imperialism or lead to Orientalism. Therefore, in this essay I argue that in order to support the agency of Indian women, western feminists must step back; Indian women and men who seek women's uplift must claim post-patriarchal expressions of traditional Indian culture. Tradition does and should inform modern culture. However, Indian women's uplift movements and western feminism alike must utilize both ancient and modern wisdom in our quest for …

Application Of The Spiritual Intelligence Self-Report Inventory (Sisri-24) Among Hong Kong University Students, Arita W. Y. Chan, Angela F. Y. Siu Jan 2016

Application Of The Spiritual Intelligence Self-Report Inventory (Sisri-24) Among Hong Kong University Students, Arita W. Y. Chan, Angela F. Y. Siu

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Spiritual Intelligence Self-Report Inventory (SISRI-24). Two hundred thirteen undergraduate students in Hong Kong completed the Chinese SISRI-24, the Meaning of Life Questionnaire, the Metapersonal Self-Construal Scale, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale to allow examination of internal reliability and construct validity. Confirmatory factor analysis was also performed to examine whether the model of King and DeCicco (2009) fit our data. Our results indicated that the full scale of the Chinese SISRI-24 and its four subscales had acceptable internal reliability. The results also showed …

Going Berserk: Battle Trance And Ecstatic Holy Warriors In The European War Magic Tradition, Jenny Wade Jan 2016

Going Berserk: Battle Trance And Ecstatic Holy Warriors In The European War Magic Tradition, Jenny Wade

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Largely ignored in transpersonal studies to date, dark magic involves socially-transgressive processes called becoming-intense and becoming-animal that produce non-ordinary states useful in the arts, hunting, sex, and fighting. War magic, a form of dark magic that involves powers of destruction and invulnerability, is ubiquitous and universal, and one of its primary features is the production of helpful, nonordinary states in combat. Berserkergang (going berserk) is one such state, the latest documented in a long history of Indo-European ecstatic warrior cults. Berserkergang was the battle-trance of the elite consecrated warrior-shamans of Odin, god of magic, poetry, battle, and death. Distinguishing features …

Prayer Songs: Therapy That Aided A People's Survival, Bisola Marignay Jan 2016

Prayer Songs: Therapy That Aided A People's Survival, Bisola Marignay

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This paper proposes a parallelism between existential psychotherapy and the psychospiritual healing function Negro Spirituals had for enslaved people in the United States. The songs’ beauty and profundity are asserted as having high value in their therapeutic function. The courage and wisdom enslaved people employed to resist psychic domination are discussed in conjunction with examples of their ways of maintaining hope, which is viewed as a prerequisite for their restorative use of the Spirituals. The attributes of sound and music are discussed with descriptions of how they have been used to substantiate the power of the Spirituals as distinct expressions …

Supported by a literature review, eight interviews from youth …

The Effect Of Internally Versus Externally Focused Balance Training On Mindfulness, Kathleen J. Pantano, Jeremy E. C. Genovese Jan 2016

The Effect Of Internally Versus Externally Focused Balance Training On Mindfulness, Kathleen J. Pantano, Jeremy E. C. Genovese

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The purpose of this study was to determine how alternative types of instruction provided during a 6-week balance exercise program affect mindfulness. A sample of 63 college students was recruited for the study. Group 1 (N = 33) received a 6-week balance exercise intervention instructed with an internal focus of attention (IFA). Group 2 (N = 30) received the same intervention, but exercises were instructed with an external focus of attention (EFA). Mindfulness was measured at baseline and at 6 weeks using the Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory (FMI). Baseline FMI scores between groups were similar (Group 1: 41.6; Group 2: 41.3), …

Womanist Preservation: An Analysis Of Black Women’S Spiritual Coping, Angelina Graham Jan 2016

Womanist Preservation: An Analysis Of Black Women’S Spiritual Coping, Angelina Graham

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The highly spiritual and religious nature of Black women is fairly established in the social science arena, yet the transpersonal field yields very little discourse on this relevant nexus. This static void resembles the macro and micro aggressions Black women face routinely in the Western world which perpetually diminishes and nullifies their collective character and lived experiences. The ostracism Black women face regularly stems primarily from the triple threat of racism, sexism and socioeconomic status which thereby stimulates the inherent and roused use of spiritual practices as a form of resiliency. By analyzing existing research this investigation exposes the experiences, …

A Survey Of Children’S And Young Adult Literature Collections In Academic Libraries Of Christian Higher Education, Melissa Atkinson Jan 2016

A Survey Of Children’S And Young Adult Literature Collections In Academic Libraries Of Christian Higher Education, Melissa Atkinson

The Christian Librarian

Children’s and young adult literature collections have an important place in an academic library. Most often, these collections go unnoticed by many in academia, who may regard children’s literature as irrelevant to the mission of the academic library. In reality, these important collections support institutional curriculum and include interdisciplinary resources used in many academic departments. Findings are reported of a survey conducted of private Christian colleges and universities regarding their management of children’s and young adult literature collections which seeks to identify current practices and procedures being utilized. Results from the survey highlight use, promotion, and management.

The Christian Academic Librarian In The Technological Society, David B. Malone

The Christian Librarian

In our contemporary society, technologies establish the course of our lives. Libraries have always engaged various technologies to bring order to disorder and over the last two decades, academic libraries have undergone significant technological change. Librarians have sought to convey an orderliness to the visible world and humanity’s body of knowledge. How this technology and body of knowledge is engaged bears significance. The engagement of the Christian academic librarian should include a distinctly Christian perspective. This paper examines the engagement of the Christian academic librarian in the technological society.

Creating An Institutional Repository, Nathan R. Schwartz Jan 2016

Creating An Institutional Repository, Nathan R. Schwartz

The Christian Librarian

Creating an institutional repository (IR) requires much forethought and planning. Setting up a university IR committee will help direct policy and collection goals, and will encourage faculty participation. There are many things to consider in design such as branding, policy, copyright, collection development, author submissions and discoverability. Publishing in an IR requires original works, and copyright issues arise, especially if authors wish to publish in other journals. Our IR goal was to promote scholarship and encourage faculty to create publishing profile space in SelectedWorks, which can become a virtual curricula vita. The ultimate goal is discoverability and open access contribution …

The Power Of Encouragement: The Role Of Christian Academic Librarians In Supporting The Whole Student, Earleen J. Warner Jan 2016

The Power Of Encouragement: The Role Of Christian Academic Librarians In Supporting The Whole Student, Earleen J. Warner

The Christian Librarian

Christian librarians are exhorted to consider the role of providing encouragement, care, and emotional and spiritual support to college students. Caring for the whole student can have a positive impact on college student success and retention, as well as have a transformational effect on students’ spiritual lives. By treating college students as whole persons created in the image of God, Christians academic librarians can not only help these students succeed by meeting their academic needs, but also help students thrive by supporting them emotionally and spiritually.

You Want Coffee With That? Revisiting The Library As Place, Shelia Gaines Jan 2016

You Want Coffee With That? Revisiting The Library As Place, Shelia Gaines

The Christian Librarian

The constantly changing roles of libraries and librarians, as well as the onslaught of electronic resources and mobile technology, have refocused attention on the library’s place and value in today’s society. This paper highlights a 2015 academic library conference presentation and includes supplemental information on the subject. It focuses on the library less as the traditional place to gather information and more as the meeting place – a third place – where like-minded individuals, their information-gathering devices in tow, enter and expect “super-sized” customer service.
