Treatment Issues For Native Americans: An Overview Of Individual, Family, And Group Strategies, Cindy L. Juntunen, Paula M. Morin Jan 2004

Treatment Issues For Native Americans: An Overview Of Individual, Family, And Group Strategies, Cindy L. Juntunen, Paula M. Morin

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

The need for improved counseling and mental health services for Native Americans is readily apparent. Several significant mental health concerns exist within the Native American population, including high rates of depression, suicide, substance use, and post-traumatic stress syndrome (Indian Health Services, 2001). In fact, the Indian Health Services (IHS) reports that mental health concerns account for more than one third of the demand for services from IHS facilities. However, there is a serious lack of resources for meeting these needs. Furthermore, an astounding lack of attention is paid to Native American issues in the professional counseling and psychological literature, which …

Towards Heterogeneous Faith Communities: Understanding Transitional Processes In Seventh-Day Adventist Churches In South Africa, Alan Parker, Ph.D. Jan 2004

Towards Heterogeneous Faith Communities: Understanding Transitional Processes In Seventh-Day Adventist Churches In South Africa, Alan Parker, Ph.D.

Faculty Works

This dissertation examines racial transition toward heterogeneity in three Seventh-day Adventist congregations in South Africa. This dissertation aims to uncover social factors involved in this change as well as to set forth a theological direction with application to the local faith community.

The first section examines recent studies and literature on multiracial congregations, indicating a possible breakdown between theory and practice. Using insights from Kuhn, Gadamer, Habermas, and Geertz, a critical correlational approach is proposed using narrative, community-based praxis, dialectical thinking, and eschatological vision. The theological methods of Groome and Browning are combined to suggest a four-phase approach to practical …

The Negro Science Of Exchange: Classical Economics And Its Chicago Revival, David M. Levy, Sandra J. Peart Jan 2004

The Negro Science Of Exchange: Classical Economics And Its Chicago Revival, David M. Levy, Sandra J. Peart

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

For analytical purposes, are economic agents—humans—the same or not? In this chapter, we argue that, historically, the debate between those who trusted in markets and those who did not followed logically from different answers to this questions. Starting with Adam Smith, classical economists held that humans are the same in their capacity for language and trade. They concluded that since markets are useful for some agents, they are beneficial for all of us. But the supposition of homogeneous competence was widely questioned in the nineteenth century but those who held that significant differences exist among humans, only some of whom …

Research Manuscript Series

The following report , brought together with great skill and insight by editors Russell K. Skowronek and Margaret A. Graham , provides a rich trovel of valuable information about what has been found there archaeologically and what it means. Some of this meaning reflects the kinds of lives people were leading in ancient times where students now cross over the Alameda Mall, and the very different kinds of activities people were conducting in those ancient times. Part reflects how these discoveries have already affected present-day consciousness, and what some of the changes have been in regard to public appreciation of …

Promise Of Welfare Reform: Development Through Devolution On Indian Reservations, Shanta Pandey, Eddie Brown, Leslie Scheuler-Whitaker Jan 2004

Promise Of Welfare Reform: Development Through Devolution On Indian Reservations, Shanta Pandey, Eddie Brown, Leslie Scheuler-Whitaker

Buder Center for American Indian Studies Research

In the 1990s, devolution of authority from federal to states and local governmental institutions in the administration of social welfare policies, programs, and services is seen as an answer to alleviating poverty among low-income families with children. To this effect, the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) of 1996 has granted an option to tribal governments to administer their own Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) services. In this article we provide findings from early experience of tribes within Arizona in their attempt to self-administer TANF services. We collected and analyzed data from multiple sources, including a review …

Introduction (Watching Jim Crow: The Struggles Over Mississippi Television, 1955-1969.), Steven Classen

Faculty Publications - Department of Communication and Cinematic Arts

The broadcast complex that houses WLBT-TV remains today where it has always been, a few blocks outside the modest cluster of skyscrapers that defines downtown Jackson, Mississippi. Built in the 1950s a short distance from prominent businesses and seats of government, the center's managers have long enjoyed proximity to political and economic power. But as the years have passed, station planners have faced the problem of updating the center's aging physical plant and technologies. The architectural results are an eclectic mix- a layering of the new upon the old- as a consequence of repeated remodeling projects. While the station's original …

"Not An Average Human Being": How Economics Succumbed To Racial Accounts Of Economic Man, Sandra J. Peart, David M. Levy Jan 2004

"Not An Average Human Being": How Economics Succumbed To Racial Accounts Of Economic Man, Sandra J. Peart, David M. Levy

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

In this chapter, we shall show how the attacks on the doctrine of human homogeneity succeeded—how, late in the century, economists came to embrace accounts of racial heterogeneity entailing different capacities of optimization.1 We attribute the demise of the classical tradition largely to the ill-understood influence of anthropologists and eugenicists2 and to a popular culture that served to disseminate racial theories visually and in print. Specifically, W. R. Greg, James Hunt, and Francis Galton all attacked the analytical postulate of homogeneity that characterized classical economics from Adam Smith3 through John Stuart Mill. Greg cofounded the eugenics movement …
