A Living Wage For All Manitobans?: Perspectives From The Private Sector, Paul Campbell Sheridan

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In response to the growing problem of working poverty around the world, a grassroots movement has emerged and spread internationally in the last two decades. This movement proposes the adoption of living wage policies and practice as part of a comprehensive poverty reduction strategy in the context of the neoliberal retrenchment of social safety nets. While successful at the local government level in the USA and the U. K., the movement has struggled to make inroads into the private sector, which is where the bulk of sub-living-wage jobs are situated. Using a qualitative methodology informed by critical theory, this study …

Analyzing The Roles Of Local Non-Governmental Organizations (Ngos) In Sustainable Tourism: A Case Study Of Belize, Central America, Shaun Finnetty

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have become influential development actors in the developing world over the last two decades and are becoming increasingly involved in “sustainable” activities. However, there has been little attention given specifically to how NGOs impact sustainable development through particular development activities such as tourism and if the organizations themselves are sustainable. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis was to address this shortcoming in the development literature by undertaking a comprehensive study that analyzed the role of NGOs in the tourism sector in Belize. The research utilized a qualitative approach and employed descriptive survey techniques along with an extensive …

Government Coordinating Agencies In Canadian Coastal Planning And Management: The Islands Trust And The Waterfront Regeneration Trust, Colin Graham Crance

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In the coastal zone, relationships between natural, social and economic processes are often intense. This complexity has led to a host of government agencies involved in the planning and management of coastal environments. Unfortunately, these institutions often work at cross purposes, generating inefficiencies and exacerbating conflict. This conflict is compounded by the increasing participation of non-governmental groups and local interests in resource use decision-making. Further, reduced spending by the public sector is restricting government programs. These problems are not limited to Canada as there have been international calls to improve coastal area planning and management by forming authorities to coordinate …

User Fees For Residential Waste Disposal: Issues, Feasibility And A Case Study Of Decision-Making (Ontario), Pietro Bertollo

A Case Study Of Black West Indian Migrants In Urban Canada: The Decision To Migrate, Patrick Richardson Jan 1991

A Case Study Of Black West Indian Migrants In Urban Canada: The Decision To Migrate, Patrick Richardson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The main purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which traditional models of the migration decision making process adequately account for and describe the decision making process of black West Indian immigrants in Canada. Traditional models of the migration decision making process have suggested that individuals migrate after a rational comparison of place utilities (Wolpert, 1964; Roseman, 1971). These human capital models of migration (De Jong et al, 1981) suggest that individuals, acting in a very rational manner, seek always to maximize their “profits” at an optimum location. However, this study suggests that in the case of …

In response to this deterioration numerous downtown renewal schemes have been implemented with varying degrees of success.
