Scholars of the life sciences industry argue that spatial linkages between research and production have been critical to the growth of the biotechnology and biopharmaceutical sectors. (Feldman and Ronzio, 2001, 2006; Pisano, 1997). More recently, work by Jennifer Clark has suggested that firms in innovation-intensive industries gain competitive advantage from localized supply chains and close control over the manufacturing process. Clark contends that the co-location of design and production makes for regional economies that are innovative and resilient as well as more socially equitable (2013).
Because it has been difficult to understand spatial relationships between manufacturing and R&D using establishment …

Programs For Homeless Children And Youth: A Critical Review Of Evidence, Janette E. Herbers, J. J. Cutuli
J. J. Cutuli
To date, there are few studies that use rigorous research designs to evaluate interventions designed to address the needs of homeless children. Strengths and noteworthy findings as well as the challenges and limitations of this literature are summarized. The studies reviewed in this chapter represent laudable efforts on the part of researchers, practitioners, and community partners to engage in intervention studies with the challenging and understudied population of children in families experiencing homelessness. However, within the guidelines of the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) standards for evidence based practices, none of the interventions represented in these studies have sufficient evidence to …

Promoting Resilience For Children Who Experience Family Homelessness: Opportunities To Encourage Developmental Competence, J. J. Cutuli, Janette E. Herbers
J. J. Cutuli
A developmental perspective on resilience is needed to inform policies and programs that respond to family homelessness. Homelessness and the experiences associated with it can threaten and disrupt healthy development in children, contributing to worse academic achievement, more emotional and behavioral problems, and lower levels of developmental competence in a variety of other domains. Scholarship on resilience and risk provides a framework for understanding how and why this happens, identifying ways to prevent and compensate for the negative impacts of the homeless experience on children. We first explain the fundamental concepts underlying this framework. Through a review of literature on …
Media Impact On Disaster Public Policy, John R. Fisher
Media Impact On Disaster Public Policy, John R. Fisher
Dr. John R. Fisher
Decades of research suggest the media play a secondary role in the development of public policy. This appears to be equally true in media coverage of disasters. While the media may heighten awareness of an issue, individual public opinion leaders, particularly the wealthy and influential, have greater impact on the formation of public policy.
