Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most prevalent parent reported diagnosis among children 3-17 years of age. Parents of children with ADHD often evoke more coercive or negative interactions to help manage their child’s behavior. In addition, they report increased levels of family conflict and higher stress levels, which can place stress on couples and other members within the family system. These interactions may lead to negative reinforcement cycles that maintain or worsen problem behaviors of the child. Developmental disabilities affect nearly one in six children in the United States; up to 30 % of these individuals have problem behaviors causing stressors in both the child and their caregiver’s lives. These problem behaviors have various topographical and functional forms, such as property destruction, aggression, tantrums, self-injurious behavior, and many others. If these behaviors are not nipped in the bud during younger years they have the capability to bring about academic failure, alienation from typical peers and other adults, and in the longer term, substance abuse issues, and a decrease in functioning skills within their communities. There is copious research investigating the effect of environmental cues on the maintenance of drug behavior in animals, but sparse data exist with regard to humans. In our study, we examined 6 dependent cigarette smokers from James Madison University. We paid participants to use novel lighters that served as audible/tactile cues. After 2 weeks, participants returned to the lab satiated with nicotine for their testing session in which they were presented with the same cue and immediately completed a multiple-choice procedure (MCP) that measured their preferences by offering choices regarding money or the ability to take a cigarette break. Research has supported the impact of social-emotional skills on learning and on a student’s ability to access classroom instruction, including the presence of a positive association between optimism and academic success. Students with disabilities are likely to experience high levels of negative experiences in school during social interactions and academic instruction.
