The New Politics Of Sports Franchise Policy Innovation In Chicago, John P. Pelissero, Beth M. Henschen, Edward I. Sidlow

Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The urban regime in Chicago was an integral player in the determination of sports policy during the 1980s and early 1 990s. As the mediator of every major sports issue, the regime orchestrated the policy response in innovative ways. Regulatory powers were used to control night baseball in Wrigleyville, ultimately appeasing the team owners and most neighborhood residents. Economic development policies were adapted to keep the White Sox, but these were adopted with a major regulatory component and the progressive regime also wove a major social benefit into the redevelopment of the ballpark neighborhood. Although an accommodation to appease the …

Public Opinion In Poland's Transition To Market Economy, David S. Mason Jan 1992

Public Opinion In Poland's Transition To Market Economy, David S. Mason

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Public opinion research has changed dramatically in the last ten years in Poland, in terms of its methodology, scope, and role in political change. During the "first" Solidarity era (1980–81), the genie of public opinion was let out of the bottle, and even martial law could not entirely put it back. Public opinion polling in the 1980s became more sophisticated and more common, and began to tackle increasingly sensitive political issues. Public opinion came to play a role in the political process, and to give the Polish population a sense of its own purpose and values. It also revealed the …

From Libertarianism To Egalitarianism, Justin Schwartz Jan 1992

From Libertarianism To Egalitarianism, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

A standard natural rights argument for libertarianism is based on the labor theory of property: the idea that I own my self and my labor, and so if I "mix" my own labor with something previously unowned or to which I have a have a right, I come to own the thing with which I have mixed by labor. This initially intuitively attractive idea is at the basis of the theories of property and the role of government of John Locke and Robert Nozick. Locke saw and Nozick agreed that fairness to others requires a proviso: that I leave "enough …

“Sorry, Wrong Number”: Why Media Polls On Gun Control Are So Often Unreliable, David B. Kopel, Gary Mauser Jan 1992

“Sorry, Wrong Number”: Why Media Polls On Gun Control Are So Often Unreliable, David B. Kopel, Gary Mauser

David B Kopel

How scientific are the polls reported in the media on the gun control issue? Without arguing for or against gun controls, this article examines the interviewing and

sampling methods used by media polls and finds that some polls claiming impressive majorities in favor of severe gun controls may not be accurate.

This article was originally published in Political Communication and Persuasion, vol. 9, pp. 69-92 (1992). This web version is a from a reprint (without the tables) in the Journal on Firearms & Public Policy, volume 6, pp. 23-53 (1994). Starred page numbers [*24] indicate the beginning of a new …

Nonparametric Event Study Tests, Arnold R. Cowan Jan 1992

Nonparametric Event Study Tests, Arnold R. Cowan

Arnold R. Cowan

This paper provides the first documentation of the power and specification of the generalized sign test, which is based on the percentage of positive abnormal returns in an estimation period. In simulations using daily stock return data, the generalized sign test is well specified with both exchange listed and Nasdaq stocks. A rank test is more powerful under ideal conditions. However, the rank test is more sensitive to increases in the length of the event window, to increases in return variance and to thin trading. The generalized sign test is a viable alternative to the rank test under these conditions.

The Requirements Of Citizenship In A Modern Democracy, Joseph Stahl Jan 1992

The Requirements Of Citizenship In A Modern Democracy, Joseph Stahl

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Our current understanding of citizenship is grounded in our culture of individualism and results in a flawed conception of the good citizen in a liberal democratic state. The culture of individualism presents a flawed view of the person, fails to recognize our interconnections and common problems, encourages only adversarial democracy, alters the nature of our democracy and fails to recognize the potentials of common action. For these reasons the culture of individualism destroys meaningful citizenship as it alienates us from one another and prevents us from recognizing a limited common good --the protection and enhancement of each individual's life opportunities. …
