The "Guestworker" As Metaphor: In Clarification Of Social Economic Contradictions And Systemic Crisis., Stephen I. Woods Jan 1980

The "Guestworker" As Metaphor: In Clarification Of Social Economic Contradictions And Systemic Crisis., Stephen I. Woods

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

In May 1979 the French National Assembly passed legislation giving the government sweeping powers to expel foreign workers. Yet neither the government nor the employers really want to send most of the immigrant workers home, and thereby lose them as a source of cheap labor for both public and private enterprise. It is likely that the employers hope to use the new legislation to keep foreign workers in a state of permanent insecurity, to discourage them from protesting against their low pay, poor working conditions and the racism they encounter daily. Indeed, employers would like to see foreign workers treated …

Deterrence And The Arms Race: The Impotence Of Power, Jacek J. Kugler, Abramo Fimo Kenneth Organski, Daniel J. Fox Jan 1980

Deterrence And The Arms Race: The Impotence Of Power, Jacek J. Kugler, Abramo Fimo Kenneth Organski, Daniel J. Fox

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

So much has been done in the name of nuclear deterrence, so much destructive power built by ourselves and the Russians that it may seem rather late in the day, not to say absurd, to wonder whether or not mutual deterrence really occurs and ask what evidence can be adduced to prove it. Yet such a question may be essential to an understanding of international nuclear politics. The problems thus posed are difficult, however, and cannot be solved by direct means. What one needs to do is to establish empirically whether the conditions necessary for deterrence to be taking place …

A Study Of The Community Development Advisory Act Committee 1978-1979, Christopher W. Cottrell Jan 1980

A Study Of The Community Development Advisory Act Committee 1978-1979, Christopher W. Cottrell

Honors Theses

This paper will focus on the Community Development Act Advisory Committee, (CDAAC), for the year 1978-79. This Citizens Advisory Committee is required under the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Community Development Block Grant, Entitlement Grant Program. The City of Kalamazoo, as an applicant for community development Block Grant funds, must have citizen input on how funds should be spent on the neighborhoods that qualify for assistance. This year there is about $2,323,563 which can be spent to improve the housing and community needs of what the city calls the six comprehensive Neighborhood Revitalization Areas or more commonly known …

British Reaction To German Foreign Policy, January 1933 To June 1936, Nigel J. Cox Jan 1980

British Reaction To German Foreign Policy, January 1933 To June 1936, Nigel J. Cox

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the foreign policy inter-action between Britain and Germany from January, 1933 to June, 1936, and to analyse British action, reaction and aims in foreign policy during that time.

In Chapter I, I deal with three broad ideas by way of introduction. First, there is an analysis of those groups which are acting and reacting in the sphere of foreign policy. There are four groups enumerated: the governmental or official group; the parliamentary group; the press; and, finally, public opinion. The make-up of these groups, the sources for discovering their reactions, and the …

Sex, Sickness And Statehood: The Influence Of Victorian Medical Opinion On Self-Government In Utah, E. Victoria Grover-Swank Jan 1980

Sex, Sickness And Statehood: The Influence Of Victorian Medical Opinion On Self-Government In Utah, E. Victoria Grover-Swank

Theses and Dissertations

In the struggle for self-government which occupied the Mormon population of Utah between their entry into the Great Basin in 1847 and statehood in 1896, the issue of polygamy dominated public discussion. The non-Mormon population of the United States generally objected to the practice of polygamy, in large part because of Victorian attitudes towards sexual activity and the presumed physical and mental results of violating Victorian sexual norms. It was assumed by most Americans that polygamy, by violating those norms, caused real physical damage to the Latter-day Saints in Utah; damage that disqualified them from holding full and equal political …

Mississippi Redistricting 1977-1980, Thomas B. Hofeller Jan 1980

Mississippi Redistricting 1977-1980, Thomas B. Hofeller

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This is a study of the 1977-78 redistricting of the Mississippi State Legislature. It was a process that saw the culmination of a struggle between the civil rights forces and the "Establishment" in Mississippi, but its origins span almost the entire period of the "reapportionment revolution" in the United States.

Maintenance Of An Empire: Soviet Foreign Behaviour In The ’80s, Pierre Eugene Lacompte Jan 1980

Maintenance Of An Empire: Soviet Foreign Behaviour In The ’80s, Pierre Eugene Lacompte

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The thesis undertakes an examination of certain Soviet problems which upon analysis serve to support the views of publicists such as Richard Nixon, Richard Pipes, Edward Luttwak, Paul Nitze, and Eugene Rostow. These experts argue that the Soviet Union is bent on a course of world hegemony. The objective of the thesis is to determine if the Soviet leadership is under lateral pressure to expand. Two proportions underline the broad theme of the thesis: that the Soviet Union is the de facto Russian empire, with the same concerns, i.e. stability and Russian domination; that real arms restraint on the part …

The Appropriateness Of The Concept Of The Individual, Frank Clancy Jan 1980

The Appropriateness Of The Concept Of The Individual, Frank Clancy

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The fundamental concepts of any discipline ought to be examined periodically, not only to understand what constitutes those principles or concepts but also to ensure that our basic assumptions are logically and empirically acceptable. This thesis calls for the reexamination of the concept of the “individual” and of its role as the basic or fundamental unit of human society. Two suggestions are made an indications that possible alternative views are logically consistent with the data presently at our disposal. The first suggestion is that the concept of the individual in Western culture was formed largely as a by-product of a …

"Cool Reflexion" And The Criticism Of Values: Is, Ought, And Objectivity In Hume's Social Science, Stephen G. Salkever Jan 1980

"Cool Reflexion" And The Criticism Of Values: Is, Ought, And Objectivity In Hume's Social Science, Stephen G. Salkever

Political Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

Is the fact/value distinction incompatible with the possibility of a social science which is both objective and evaluative (or normative)? Does support of the latter require rejection of the former and vice versa? This article presents an indirect argument against the incompatibility of the fact/value distinction and an objectively evaluative social science. My procedure is to show that David Hume, whose is/ought distinction is the locus classicus of the fact/value distinction, is committed both to the view that values cannot be derived from facts and to the view that social science is not (and should not be) value-neutral. Furthermore, Hume's …

James D. Barber: "The Presidential Character": An Attempt Of Applicability, Renate Irene Ahlers Jan 1980

James D. Barber: "The Presidential Character": An Attempt Of Applicability, Renate Irene Ahlers

Masters Theses

In 1972 James Barger published his book The Presidential Character: Predicting Performance in the White House. In this book Barber tries to typify the American Presidents, beginning with William H. Taft, according to four psycho-political categories: active-positive, active-negative, passive-positive, and passive-negative. The most important part of Barber's thesis is that the future performance of any presidential candidate can be predicted by looking at the factors that place him into a certain category. These factors are his character, his world view and style, the power situation, and the climate of expectations. Character, world view, and style are clearly formed well …

An Analysis Of Israeli Domestic Political Characteristics And Their Affect On The Middle East Conflict, David Hight Jan 1980

An Analysis Of Israeli Domestic Political Characteristics And Their Affect On The Middle East Conflict, David Hight

Masters Theses

The conflict in the Middle East is a turbulent situation of great significance to the entire world. This study examines the internal political scene of Israel and its affect on the overall Middle East situation. It focuses on ideology, structure, and policy within Israel as components of that scene.

The ideology of Zionism provided the justification for the creation of Israel and continues to form the basis for governmental decision making there. An analysis of the principles of Zionism and of the statements, writings, and actions of Zionist leaders showed that the ideology could reasonably be interpreted as racist and …
