Cultural Identity In The European Union: The Discovery Of A New Challenge, Marcello Bruni Dec 1994

Cultural Identity In The European Union: The Discovery Of A New Challenge, Marcello Bruni

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Cultural identity represents the impending problem that must be overcome in the integration process of the European Union. The significance of the Maastricht Treaty is now embodied in its implementation from the European super-national level to the national one. In this regard, the citizens of each member state appear to be confronted by the bifurcating enigma posed by the European integration issue that challenges the psycho-sociological perception of nationhood. This paper emphasizes the configuration of a new European federative cultural identity which complements -- but does not substitute -- the primordial, or national, identification of each individual within the context …

Francis Lieber’S Theory Of Institutional Liberty, Steven Samson Nov 1994

Francis Lieber’S Theory Of Institutional Liberty, Steven Samson

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Lieber argued that external liberty is an outgrowth of internal freedom. Real freedom is “perpetual, individual, and relates to the whole being.” Liberty is “granted, guaranteed, and, therefore, generally of a public character.” It is the political expression of this preexisting moral condition of the people. It is a practical result of flourishing institutions of self-government.

Thomas Hobbes's "A Discourse Of Laws", Noel B. Reynolds Sep 1994

Thomas Hobbes's "A Discourse Of Laws", Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

The recent discovery that an anonymously published 1620 essay was an early writing of Thomas Hobbes invites investigation of his early thinking. Hobbes relied on mostly classical sources to advance a basically conventionalist theory of law and to anticipate twentieth century analyses of the principles of rule of law such as that made famous by F. A. Hayek.

South Africa In Transition: The Influence Of The Political Personalities Of Nelson Mandela And F.W. De Klerk, Aubrey Immelman Jul 1994

South Africa In Transition: The Influence Of The Political Personalities Of Nelson Mandela And F.W. De Klerk, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to examine salient factors accounting for South Africa’s relatively peaceful transition from apartheid state to nonracial democracy, focusing on the political personalities of South African leaders P.W. Botha, F.W. de Klerk, and Nelson Mandela. Following a brief overview of situational variables, the paper describes the political personalities of Mandela and De Klerk as assessed by the Millon-Type Political Personality Checklist (MPPC). The study shows that one cannot fully account for political developments in South Africa’s transition without considering (a) the interaction between situational variables and the political personalities of Nelson Mandela and F.W. de …

The Answering Machine Generation - Who Are They And What Problem Do They Pose For Survey Research, Robert W. Oldendick, Michael W. Link

Faculty Publications

Increased incidence of telephone answering machines and the use of such devices to screen calls pose a potential threat to the representativeness of samples in telephone surveys. Using data from nine statewide surveys, this analysis examines the extent to which answering machines are used to screen calls and the demographic characteristics associated with answering machine use and call screening. Results show that at most two to three percent of households use answering machines to screen calls, and that such screening is more likely to take place in households with higher family incomes, outside rural areas, and which include individuals who …

The Scope Of Abortion Rights Since Roe V. Wade And The Next Tier: The Right To Access, Thomas Wayne Gaylord '94 May 1994

The Scope Of Abortion Rights Since Roe V. Wade And The Next Tier: The Right To Access, Thomas Wayne Gaylord '94

Honors Projects

Since the Supreme Court's 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade, abortion has occupied a lot of the Court's time and energy. Beyond the legalization of the procedure, the Court has had to wrestle with several related issues, as well. Ranging from parental consent laws to waiting periods, from state-and federal-funding denials to procedural regulations, the Court has ruled on many abortion-related issues, most of them more than three times. Although most of these issues were ruled on in Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey (1992), the Court's invocation of the "undue burden" test will probably cause the Court as …

The Establishment Of Illinois Riverboat Gambling And Its Impact On Alton, Peoria, And Joliet, Julie A. Dressler '94 May 1994

The Establishment Of Illinois Riverboat Gambling And Its Impact On Alton, Peoria, And Joliet, Julie A. Dressler '94

Honors Projects

Riverboat gambling IS characteristic of the political economic theory which states development is managed by a growth machine, which is a small number of key actors and institutions in the community (Holupka and Schlay, 176). Those actors, such as politicians and businessmen, often benefit the most and are likely to encourage public funding in order to assure the business will locate in the city. (Holupka and Schlay, 180). Unlike most corporations, which would probably have thousands of investors, the riverboats have limited partnerships and are considered entrepreneurial endeavors in which the partners anticipate a high return on their investment. The …
