Daily Stock Market Movement From Oscillating Social Mood Factors, Cari Bourette Dec 2011

Daily Stock Market Movement From Oscillating Social Mood Factors, Cari Bourette

Cari Bourette

Since 2006, there has been ongoing research into the correlation of a set of oscillating mood factors and socioeconomic, geopolitical, and natural events with the goal of forecasting increased risks of destabilizing events. While promising results have been forthcoming, it has been difficult to present models that allowed those outside a small circle of specialists to participate. Between July 2007 and June 2010, weekly social mood projections, as published in monthly issues of MoodCompass, were used to develop a model to convert four oscillating mood factors into stock market expectations. This model was modified to generate signals of projected stock …

The Challenges Of Electoral Process Institutions Of The Zanzibar And Union Elections Of 1995, 2000 And 2005: Anything New With The Election Expenses Act, 2010?, Conrad John Masabo Mr. Dec 2011

The Challenges Of Electoral Process Institutions Of The Zanzibar And Union Elections Of 1995, 2000 And 2005: Anything New With The Election Expenses Act, 2010?, Conrad John Masabo Mr.

Conrad John Masabo Mr.

Though it is true that elections alone do not guarantee proper functioning of democracies, they are the most convenient means of effecting orderly political successions of office bearers. But for elections to become credible instruments to political succession its adherence to the rules of the game as well as procedures which had been agreed upon by players themselves. In that regard the constitutional and legal framework governing the electoral processes have been always central and among the fundamental issues during elections. They thus constitute most important decrees in setting conditions under which elections are conducted in a country. This paper …

El Efecto De Las Leyes Electorales Sobre La Fragmentación Partidaria En Chile, 2004‐2008. Voto Estratégico, Barreras A La Entrada E Información., Sergio Y. Toro, Rafael Piñeiro, Mauricio Morales Dec 2011

El Efecto De Las Leyes Electorales Sobre La Fragmentación Partidaria En Chile, 2004‐2008. Voto Estratégico, Barreras A La Entrada E Información., Sergio Y. Toro, Rafael Piñeiro, Mauricio Morales

Sergio Y. Toro

The Oecd And Phases In The International Political Economy, 1961-2011, Judith Clifton, Daniel Díaz-Fuentes Dec 2011

The Oecd And Phases In The International Political Economy, 1961-2011, Judith Clifton, Daniel Díaz-Fuentes

Judith Clifton

In 2011, the OECD turned fifty. To provide a broad foundation for further thinking on this organization, we analyse its evolution over half a century from two perspectives: phases in the international political economy and the literature on IPE. By so doing, we uncover two paradoxes. Firstly, we find that the organization’s evolution closely mirrored major phases in the postwar international political economy until recently. However, the OECD’s long-term dependence on theWest has now become an obstacle to its efforts to adapt to the latest phase, characterised by the rise of non-Western powers. Secondly, we show that, during the OECD’s …

El Secreto Del Éxito: Presidentes Y Cártles Legislativos En Uruguay, Daniel Chasquetti Dec 2011

El Secreto Del Éxito: Presidentes Y Cártles Legislativos En Uruguay, Daniel Chasquetti

Daniel Chasquetti

In the last two decades the Uruguayan political system has shown a cooperative relationship between the two government branches. he Executives were able to pass their legislative agenda in an eicient way by building cartel-party at the Houses. his article proposes an explanation based on the theoretical developments of Cox and McCubbins (1993 and 2005), about the creation of legislative cartels in Uruguay. In particular, the article explains how constitutes a central authority in the House where the executive holds a dominant inluence, and how that authority usurps and controls the agenda power. I also present new evidence about the …

Elementos Para Una EconomíA PolíTica Del Republicanismo: Un AnáLisis CríTico De La Renta BáSica De Alaska, David Casassas, Jurgen De Wispelaere

Jurgen De Wispelaere

Ondervraging Van Irakese En Afghaanse Insurgents: De Nederlandse Ervaringen, George Dimitriu Nov 2011

Ondervraging Van Irakese En Afghaanse Insurgents: De Nederlandse Ervaringen, George Dimitriu

George Dimitriu

Beyond Anti-Semitism, Rebecca Gould Nov 2011

Beyond Anti-Semitism, Rebecca Gould

Rebecca Gould

Focusing on internal contradictions within the Israeli left, this essay considers the impact of the historical legacy of anti-Semitism on everyday thinking about Israel and the Palestinian territories. Contesting the view that to criticize Israel is to engage in anti-Semitic defamation, it offers an historical account of how Israel's actions in the West Bank have come to be immunized from conscientious criticism. It also documents how progressive media outlets in contemporary Israel have silenced or otherwise marginalized Israel's most active critics.

Differences In Pandemic Influenza Vaccination Policies For Pregnant Women In Europe, Gordon Marnoch, Michiel Luteijn, Helen Dolk Nov 2011

Differences In Pandemic Influenza Vaccination Policies For Pregnant Women In Europe, Gordon Marnoch, Michiel Luteijn, Helen Dolk

Gordon Marnoch

Background: An important component of the policy to deal with the H1N1 pandemic in 2009 was to develop and implement vaccination. Since pregnant women were found to be at particular risk of severe morbidity and mortality, the World Health Organization and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control advised vaccinating pregnant women, regardless of trimester of pregnancy. This study reports a survey of vaccination policies for pregnant women in European countries. Methods: Questionnaires were sent to European competent authorities of 27 countries via the European Medicines Agency and to leaders of registries of European Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies in …

Strategische Communicatie In Afghanistan: Alles Draait Om Perceptie, George Dimitriu Oct 2011

Strategische Communicatie In Afghanistan: Alles Draait Om Perceptie, George Dimitriu

George Dimitriu

The Arab Spring And The Illusion Of A Pragmatic Approach To Foreign Policy, Gabriel C. Lajeunesse

Gabriel C. Lajeunesse

Review: The Faces Of Terrorism: Social And Psychological Dimensions, By Neil Smelser, Dylan Kissane Oct 2011

Review: The Faces Of Terrorism: Social And Psychological Dimensions, By Neil Smelser, Dylan Kissane

Dylan Kissane

In the decade since the 9/11 terrorist attacks there have been countless books and articles published that have sought to explain Islamist terrorism and explore policy responses to terrorism from the Muslim world. A smaller sector of the literature has sought to place Islamist terror in its international political context, drawing parallels with terrorism in the Basque country, Northern Ireland and domestic groups in the United States. A smaller sector again seeks to explore not only to describe such terrorism and explore policy responses to it but also to dig deeper and uncover the motivations that drive terrorists and those …

The United States, Iran And The Continuing Salience Of Geography, Dylan Kissane Oct 2011

The United States, Iran And The Continuing Salience Of Geography, Dylan Kissane

Dylan Kissane

With recent US political and strategic goals unmet after ineffective diplomatic efforts and economic sanctions, some commentators and foreign policy experts have begun urging American strategists to employ military force to effect change in Iran’s domestic and foreign policies. Presumably inspired by American success in establishing a US-friendly regime in neighbouring Iraq, such commentators suggest that a similar strategy of overwhelming military force could overcome the existing military and political structure of Iran and establish a pro-Western regime in its place. Such notions, however, rely on ignorance of one of the most basic elements of Iran: her geography. This ignorance, …

A Sociologia Política Brasileira Em Análise: Quatro Visões Sobre O Funcionamento Administrativo Do Estado Novo, Adriano Codato Oct 2011

A Sociologia Política Brasileira Em Análise: Quatro Visões Sobre O Funcionamento Administrativo Do Estado Novo, Adriano Codato

Adriano Codato

Within Brazilian Political Sociology, there are four different views on state Administrative Departments, apparatuses created by the Vargas dictatorship in 1939 as a complement to the system of federal interventors. On the basis of these interpretations, there are also four different ways of looking at the New State regime (1937-1945) itself. Views on administrative departments diverge both according to observers' convictions regarding the way the authoritarian political system functions and according to which of these agencies' roles (political, economic, bureaucratic) the analyst considers as most salient. In this essay I analyze existing interpretations on this issue; I emphasize that which …

Preaching What We Practice: Bringing Scope And Methods “Back In”, Miguel Centellas Oct 2011

Preaching What We Practice: Bringing Scope And Methods “Back In”, Miguel Centellas

Miguel Centellas

Recent discussions of teaching research methods have focused on understand- ing the relationship between methods courses and the broader discipline, including the need to integrate qualitative methods and other approaches beyond the traditional statis- tical approaches still common in the majority of undergraduate research methods courses. This article contributes to this conversation by arguing that the basic elements of research design and qualitative techniques should be integrated into substantive (or “non-methods”) courses across the discipline. To accomplish this aim, I offer a brief outline of methodolog- ical benchmark skills—drawn from the pool of skills necessary for a successful thesis—that can …

Unanswered Questions Of A Minority People In International Law: A Comparative Study Between Southern Cameroons & South Sudan, Bernard Sama Mr Oct 2011

Unanswered Questions Of A Minority People In International Law: A Comparative Study Between Southern Cameroons & South Sudan, Bernard Sama Mr

Bernard Sama

The month July of 2011 marked the birth of another nation in the World. The distressful journey of a minority people under the watchful eyes of the international community finally paid off with a new nation called the South Sudan . As I watched the South Sudanese celebrate independence on 9 July 2011, I was filled with joy as though they have finally landed. On a promising note, I read the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon saying “[t]ogether, we welcome the Republic of South Sudan to the community of nations. Together, we affirm our commitment to helping it meet its …

El Costo De Pasar: Gobiernos De Coalición Y Gobiernos De Partido En El Proceso Legislativo Uruguayo, Daniel Chasquetti Oct 2011

El Costo De Pasar: Gobiernos De Coalición Y Gobiernos De Partido En El Proceso Legislativo Uruguayo, Daniel Chasquetti

Daniel Chasquetti
