The Alzheimer’S Association Dementia Care Coordination Program: A Process Evaluation, Executive Summary, Nina Silverstein, Frank Porell, Pamela Nadash

Nina Silverstein

The Massachusetts/New Hampshire (MA/NH) Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association has long sought ways to systematically increase the number of families who utilize its services and support. According to the Alzheimer’s Association’s 2015 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures, there are 142,000 individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and the Alzheimer’s Association estimates that less than 30% of those individuals and their caregivers take advantage of its programs (Alzheimer’s Association, 2015). The MA/NH Chapter recognized that one major barrier to accessing services is a model that relies on families taking the initiative to seek out assistance.

Massachusetts Healthy Aging Data Report: Community Profiles, Elizabeth Dugan, Frank Porell, Nina Silverstein, Ruth Palombo, Stacey Mann

Elizabeth Dugan

The Massachusetts Healthy Aging Data Report: Community Profiles was created by researchers at the Gerontology Institute of the John W. McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston and commissioned by the Tufts Health Plan Foundation.

In this report, we have created a custom profile of nearly 100 healthy aging indicators for every city and town in Massachusetts including the 16 neighborhoods of Boston (367 Community Profiles). Each Community Profile is designed to help community residents, agencies, providers, and governments understand the older adults who live in their cities and towns – their ages, …

Workplace Bullying, Perceived Job Stressors, And Psychological Distress: Gender And Race Differences In The Stress Process Feb 2017

Workplace Bullying, Perceived Job Stressors, And Psychological Distress: Gender And Race Differences In The Stress Process

Linda A. Treiber

A large body of empirical research documents the adverse mental health consequences of workplace bullying. However, less is known about gender and race differences in the processes that link workplace bullying and poor mental health. In the current study, we use structural equation modeling of survey data from the 2010 Health and Retirement Study (N = 2292) and draw on stress process theory to examine coworker support as a buffering mechanism against workplace bullying, and gender and race differences in the relationships between bullying and psychological distress. The results of the analysis indicate that coworker support serves as a protective buffer against …

Pulled In Or Pushed Out : Understanding The Complexities Of Motivation For Alternative Therapies Use In Ghana, Razak Mohammed Gyasi, Felix Asante, Joseph Yaw Yeboah, Kabila Abass, Charlotte Monica Mensah, Lawrencia Pokuah Siaw

Mr. GYASI Razak Mohammed

The impact of strong cultural beliefs on specific reasons for traditional medicine (TRM) use among individuals and populations has long been advanced in health care and spatio-medical literature. Yet, little has been done in Ghana and the Ashanti Region in particular to bring out the precise “pull” and “push” relative influences on TRM utilization. With a qualitative research approach involving rural and urban character, the study explored health beliefs and motivations for TRM use in Kumasi Metropolis and Sekyere South District, Ghana. The study draws on data from 36 in-depth interviews with adults, selected through theoretical sampling. We used the …

Do Health Beliefs Explain Traditional Medical Therapies Utilisation? Evidence From Ghana, Razak Mohammed Gyasi, Felix Asante, Kabila Abass, Joseph Yaw Yeboah, Samuel Adu-Gyamfi, Padmore Adusei Amoah Jan 2017

Do Health Beliefs Explain Traditional Medical Therapies Utilisation? Evidence From Ghana, Razak Mohammed Gyasi, Felix Asante, Kabila Abass, Joseph Yaw Yeboah, Samuel Adu-Gyamfi, Padmore Adusei Amoah

Mr. GYASI Razak Mohammed

Although the direct impact of health beliefs on unconventional medical therapies consumption are well documented, the previous empirical findings of the relationship have been much inconsistent and theoretically subtle in Ghana. Using social cognitive thesis, this paper examines how relative effects of personal health beliefs influence the use of traditional medicine in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Drawing on a qualitative approach involving rural and urban peculiarities and 36 in-depth interviews, this research study adopts a posteriori inductive reduction model to derive broad- and sub-themes. Results suggest that health-seeking behaviour in Ghana is a socially negotiated process in which cultural …

Self-Compassion And Breast Cancer In 23 Cancer Respondents: Is The Way You Relate To Yourself A Factor In Disease Onset And Progress?, Karen G. Kearnery, Richard E. Hicks

Richard Hicks

Breast Cancer has been extensively studied. However, there is limited knowledge about how psychological factors such as levels of self-compassion may be related to disease onset. This study examined whether higher levels of selfcompassion may be associated with a delayed onset of cancer and its progression and lower hyper-arousal scores in Australian women with breast cancer, using retrospective recollections as part of the study design. Participants from Australian cancer support groups were invited to complete an online survey including demographic and cancer history information, a hyper-arousal scale and a self-compassion scale (self-report scales). After data screening 23 of the 31 …

¿Cuál Es La Agenda De Desarrollo Pos-2015? Una Mirada Desde Los Determinantes Del Riesgo De Desastre, Juan Pablo Sarmiento Dec 2016

¿Cuál Es La Agenda De Desarrollo Pos-2015? Una Mirada Desde Los Determinantes Del Riesgo De Desastre, Juan Pablo Sarmiento

Juan Pablo Sarmiento

This study explores the current and projected impacts of the three post 2015 development agendas on the determinants of disaster risk: the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the Paris COP21 Agreement. The methodology is based on an ontological process, understood as an exhaustive analysis of the properties and relationships of an entity or subject of study. The process characterized and linked the objectives proposed in the three agendas through the impact of the expected results on the determinants of disaster risk. First, elements related to disaster risk within each agenda were identified. Then, following …

Secondary 7 Lifestyle Effects Screening, Scott E. Hall, Michelle Flaum Hall Dec 2016

Secondary 7 Lifestyle Effects Screening, Scott E. Hall, Michelle Flaum Hall

Scott E. Hall, Ph.D., LPCC-S

The S7-LES assesses the presence of negative or maladaptive responses (secondary crises) to medical events, illnesses, and procedures in relation to seven life domains.  The tool is a self-administered checklist that can be completed by patients in a provider’s office after a medical procedure, hospital admission, life-threatening diagnosis, or any other circumstances deemed appropriate by providers.
The S7-LES can be used as a screening tool to detect areas in which patients struggle and to help determine when a referral to a mental health professional may be necessary. It is important that you consider any “yes” response to indicate that follow-up …

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.

Individuals with a personality disorder (PD) tend to experience more negative life events (NLEs) than
positive life events (PLEs). In community samples, the Five Factor Model of personality (FFM) predicts
both positive and negative life events. The present research examined whether FFM normal personality
traits were associated with positive and negative life events among individuals with 1 of 4 PDs: avoidant,
borderline, schizotypal, and obsessive– compulsive, and tested whether associations between the FFM of
personality and PLEs and NLEs were similar across the 4 PD groups and a control group. Among
aggregated PDs, neuroticism was positively associated with NLEs, whereas …

Medical Mental Health Screening, Michelle Flaum Hall, Scott E. Hall Dec 2016

Medical Mental Health Screening, Michelle Flaum Hall, Scott E. Hall

Scott E. Hall, Ph.D., LPCC-S

The Medical Mental Health Screening tool assesses risk factors that can contribute to adverse psychological responses (specifically, traumatic stress responses) to medical events, illnesses, and procedures. It is a pre-screening tool and should be used as a means of flagging risk factors and intervening appropriately in order to prevent or minimize adverse emotional reactions to medical care.
The tool is a self-administered checklist that can be completed by patients during pre-admission to the hospital for a scheduled procedure, in a provider’s office prior to hospital admission, or in other circumstances deemed appropriate by clinicians.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Increases Amygdala Connectivity With The Cognitive Control Network In Both Mdd And Ptsd, Haochang Shou, Zhen Yang, Theodore D. Satterthwaite, Philip A. Cook, Steven E. Bruce, Russell T. Shinohara, Benjamin Rosenberg, Yvette I. Sheline Dec 2016

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Increases Amygdala Connectivity With The Cognitive Control Network In Both Mdd And Ptsd, Haochang Shou, Zhen Yang, Theodore D. Satterthwaite, Philip A. Cook, Steven E. Bruce, Russell T. Shinohara, Benjamin Rosenberg, Yvette I. Sheline

Steven Bruce

Background
Both major depressive disorder (MDD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are characterized by alterations in intrinsic functional connectivity. Here we investigated changes in intrinsic functional connectivity across these disorders as a function of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), an effective treatment in both disorders.

Methods
53 unmedicated right-handed participants were included in a longitudinal study. Patients were diagnosed with PTSD (n = 18) and MDD (n = 17) with a structured diagnostic interview and treated with 12 sessions of manualized CBT over a 12-week period. Patients received an MRI scan (Siemens 3 T Trio) before and after treatment. Longitudinal functional …

A Mobile, Avatar-Based App For Improving Body Perceptions Among Adolescents: A Pilot Test, Annmarie Lyles, Ashish Amresh, Jennifer Huberty, Michael Todd, Rebecca E. Lee

Ashish Amresh

BACKGROUND:
One barrier to effectively treating weight issues among adolescents is that they tend to use social comparison instead of objective measures to evaluate their own health status. When adolescents correctly perceive themselves as overweight, they are more likely to adopt healthy lifestyle behaviors.

OBJECTIVE:
The purpose of this pilot test was to develop and assess acceptability and usability of an avatar-based, theoretically derived mobile app entitled Monitor Your Avatar (MYA).

METHODS:
The MYA app was engineered for high school adolescents to identify, using avatars, what they thought they looked like, what they wanted to look like, and what they …
