The present study gathered both general and specific information about the behavior of a captive family group of Saguinus midas midas [red-handed tamarins] housed at the Washington Park Zoo, Portland, Oregon, USA. Saquinus midas midas is a rarely studied species, and detailed information about the behavior of this species is virtually nonexistent. For this reason, this study collected information about both activity budgets and social grouping within this family group.

The primary focus of this study was, however, the socialization of captive juvenile tamarins with respect to several behaviors relevant to reproductive success among the Callitrichidae. The behaviors assessed were: …

On Serializability Of Multidatabase Transactions Through Forced Local Conflict, Dimitrios Georgakopoulos, Marek Rusinkiewicz, Amit P. Sheth

The main difficulty in enforcing global serializability in a multidatabase environment lies in resolving indirect transitive conflicts between multidatabase transactions. Indirect conflicts introduced by local transactions are difficult to resolve because the behavior or even the existence of local transactions is not known to the multidatabase system. To overcome these problems, we propose to incorporate additional data manipulation operations in the subtransactions of each multidatabase transaction. We show that if these operations create direct conflicts between subtransactions at each participating local database system, indirect conflicts can be resolved even if the multidatabase system is not aware of their existence. Effects Of Phenobarbital In Combination With Phenytoin Or Valproic Acid On The Delayed-Matching-To-Sample Performance Of Pigeons, Catherine Ann Karas

The present study examined the effects of phenobarbital (S, 10,20, and 40 mg/kg), phenytoin (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 15 mg/kg), and valproic acid (40, 60, 80, and 120 mg/kg), and those of phenobarbital (10 and 20 mg/kg) in combination with phenytoin (2.5,5, and 7.5 mg/kg) or valproic acid (40, 60, and 80 mg/kg), on the delayed-matching-to-sample performance of pigeons. In general, high doses of each individual drug reduced accuracy. Drug combinations also reduced accuracy relative to control values. Reductions in accuracy produced by drug combinations were very similar in magnitude to those predicted by a response-addition model of drug interaction.

The first written descriptions of the flora of North America were those of sixteenth-century Europeans who marvelled at the botanical treasures brought to them by explorers of the New World. The earliest account of American natural history was that of the English botanical explorer Thomas Hariot who wrote his Briefe and True Re, port of the New Found Land of Virginia in 1590 after returning from an expedition arranged by Sir Walter Raleigh. We describe the design of BrAID (a Bridge between Artificial Intelligence and Database Management Systems), an experimental system for the efficient integration of logic based Artificial Intelligence (Al) and database (DB) technologies. Features provided by BrAID include (a) access to conventional DBMSs, (b) support for multiple inferencing strategies, (c) a powerful caching subsystem that manages views and employs subsumption to facilitate the reuse of previously cached data, (d) lazy or eager evaluation of queries submitted by the AI system, and (e) the generation of advice by the AI system to aid in cache management and query execution planning. All 2260 plant species of eastern-slope Colorado--from the continental divide east to the Nebraska and Kansas borders--can be identified using this book. That figure includes not only the native species but also the numerous introduced ones that survive without cultivation and often provide severe competition for the native flora. Much of Colorado's native plains flora was eliminated in the past century by plowing and by grazing livestock. It is correctly asserted that the intensity of the current debate over the use of animals in biomedical research is unprecedented. The extent of expressed animosity and distrust has stunned many researchers. In response, researchers have tended to take a strategic defensive posture, which involves the assertation of several abstract positions that serve to obstruct resolution of the debate. Those abstractions include the notions that the animal protection movement is trivial and purely anti-intellectual in scope, that all science is good (and some especially so), and the belief that an ethical consensus can never really be reached between the parties.

Auxin-Regulated Gene Expression, Tom J. Guilfoyle

A number of cDNA clones to independent mRNAs that increase in amount after brief exposure to auxins have been isolated. From soybean, sequenced, and characterized. Increases in mRNA abundance can be detected as early as 2.5 minutes after auxin application to excised elongating regions of soybean hypocotyls. Increased transcription rates on the genes which encode the auxin-responsive mRNAs account, at least partly, for the accumulation of mRNAs. A variety of auxins induce the accumulation of the mRNAs, but other plant hormones have no effect on the mRNA abundance. Some of the genes which encode the mRNAs are clustered in the …

A statewide study to evaluate the presence, distribution and abundance of the deer tick, Ixodes dammini, and the spirochete, Borrelia burgdorfen, in Iowa was initiated in 1989. Six hundred and seventy-one tick collections were received from health professionals, conservation employees and concerned citizens. Additional ticks were obtained by flagging, small mammal trapping and deer checks in selected areas of Iowa. Nine I. dammini were collected in 1989 from seven counties in the eastern half of the state. Six of these were tested for B. burgdorferi and all were negative. Radon In Iowa Homes: Results Of Screening Measurements, Laurent Hodges, Lynne Gillette

Homeowner-initiated short-term radon screening measurements in Iowa homes show that only about 30% of the homes have low enough radon levels - below 148 Bq/m (4.0 pC1/L) - that no follow-up measurements are necessary. Over 6 percent of the homes have screening measurements in excess of 740 Bq/m³ (20 pCi/L), a level at which prompt follow-up measurements are recommended. In all parts of the state, the range of radon results extends from low levels (below 37 Bq/m³ = 1 pCi/L) to high levels (above 740 Bq/m³). The average radon results tend to be higher than the …

Distributive Effects Of Forest Service Attempts To Maintain Community Stability, Steven E. Daniels, William F. Hyde, David N. Wear

Community stability is an objective of USDA Forest Service timber sales. This paper examines that objective, and the success the Forest Service can have in attaining it, through its intended maintenance of a constant volume timber harvest schedule. We apply a three-factor, two-sector modified general equilibrium model with empirical evidence from the timber-based counties of western Montana. Departure from a market responsive timber policy can have positive impacts on the wood products sector, but the net effects on the local community are very small. The costs to the public treasury of pursuing such a policy dwarf these small community benefits.

Arend's Kettle is a 5 ha glacial landform in Dickinson County, Iowa. The flora of this kettle was studied over two years prior to acquisition by the Nature Conservancy in 1973. The known vascular flora of Arend's Kettle as of 1973 consisted of 299 species, representing 177 genera and 59 families. The vegetation ranged from xeric short grass prairie along the rims of the kettle to mesic prairie along the middle and lower slopes. In the bottom of the kettle, there was a marsh/seasonal pond community that varied greatly in the amount of water present, depending on rainfall within the …

Use of tritiated gibberellins ([³H] GA₁, [³H] GA₄) of high specific activity and purity has allowed the determination of GA-specific binding sites in several plant tissues both in vivo and in vitro. In cucumber hypocotyls and pea epicotyls which have been most investigated the binding of [³H] GA; occurs to soluble proteins. This binding is saturable ('n' =about 30 pmol. Mg^-1 soluble protein), of high affinity (K_D= about 70 nM), and is competed for by other GA, and derivatives in proportion to their biological activity in these …
