Researchers, Instructors, & Staff Scholarship
This report is an investigation of the research practices of faculty and research staff who utilize or support data science or big data methodologies at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). The study was conducted by librarians and library staff within the Kelvin Smith Library (KSL) in collaboration with staff within CWRU University Technology ([U]tech), and was part of national selection of parallel studies occurring at public and private academic institutions throughout North America.

USU launched a program in 2016 to connect researchers seeking federal funding with librarians to assist them with data management. This program assisted over 100 researchers, but was it successful? Our presentation will discuss how we evaluated the success of this program using online asynchronous focus groups (OAFG) in conjunction with a traditional survey. Our cross-institutional research team will share our findings as well as the challenges and successes of using OAFGs to assess library services.

South Carolina Libraries
In 2019, the University of South Carolina Libraries launched a new department called Digital Research Services to support new and evolving forms of scholarship in the digital age. Departmental librarians will discuss the experience of planning and implementing a digital scholarship program and will provide suggestions for other libraries planning a digital research initiative.

Collaborative Data Literacy Education For Research Labs: A Case Study At A Large Research University, John Watts, Laura Sare, David E. Hubbard
Collaborative Librarianship
Data literacy education for graduate students can take place in many contexts. One-shot instruction sessions and credit-bearing courses are a common mode of instruction for the graduate student audience, but both share limitations regarding best practices for adult learning theory. This case study explores the benefits of data literacy education in a research lab setting and highlights the collaborations among data librarians, a liaison librarian, and research faculty that enable effective learning experiences in labs or other applied settings. The authors share the design of the curriculum, facilitation of the instruction, and the assessment of student learning, as well as …

re3data.org registry is a research data repository and provides information seekers, publishers, libraries and funding organizations an overview of the diverse research data repositories internationally. Under the FAIR Data project and with the ‘CoreTrustSeal’ certification, re3data is an amiable platform for the researchers to upload and retrieve research data through their appropriate domain repositories. The re3data.org registry of data repository services is explored and relevant data related to general profile, access policies, restriction and licenses, content types, subject coverage and other related services has been collected and analysed in this research study. The study found that, United States has the …

Research Data Management (Rdm) Services In Libraries: Lessons For Academic Libraries In Nigeria, Mgbodichima Jummai Nwabugwu, Lucky Stephen Godwin
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Research funding organizations understand the importance of infrastructure and services to organize and preserve research data. Academic research libraries have been identified as locations in which to base these research data management services. Research data management services include data management planning, digital curation (selection, preservation, maintenance, and archiving), and metadata creation and conversion. However, some libraries are beginning to provide structure for research data management services. These services are starting to record some degree of success as local data policies are being formulated. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to discuss the importance of research data management in the …

Data Management (Or How I Learned To Love My Data): Reaching Graduate Students Through A Responsible Conduct Of Research Program, Sophia Lafferty-Hess, Ciara Healy
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
At Duke University there is a requirement for all graduate students to take a number of credits in courses called Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR). While faculty and staff members can be approved to teach these two hour workshops, librarians at Duke have in the last few years proposed several that cross disciplinary boundaries, such as the workshop on retractions in the science and social scientific literature as well as more discipline focused, such as Scholarly Publishing in East Asian Studies.
For our presentation we would like to focus on developing, delivering and evolving the RCR courses on data management. …

One Workshop, Many Locations: Meeting The Needs Of Both On-Campus And Distance Students, Lisa Becksford
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
The diverse needs of graduate students can be difficult to gauge, and even when their needs are known, it can be difficult to develop programming that meets the needs of graduate students across disciplines and program levels. In spring 2018, a needs assessment survey was conducted by the graduate librarian at a large, comprehensive public university with graduate students at multiple campus locations. Based on respondents’ articulated needs for additional help in data management, research skills, scholarly publishing, and citation management, a workshop series, Research Tools for Graduate Students, was launched in fall 2019. The series sought to provide graduate …

Library Faculty Presentations
The implementation of Coastal Carolina University’s Data Management Services program is explored in this presentation. Our library continued to see growth in data management support requests from researchers, so we felt the need to programmatically develop data management services to serve those needs. We assembled a Data Management Services Working Group to examine what types of services were being offered at other M1 institutions. A research data management life cycle was then developed to serve as a standard framework. The services we currently offer were then integrated with those we knew our faculty wanted. We also explored services apart from …

Characteristic Assessment Of Advancement In Duties Of Librarians And Function Of Libraries In Data Science Era, Naimat Ullah Shah Mr., Salman Bin Naeem Dr.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Data sciences usually involve data management, its utilization, distribution as well as its re-utilization. All these components need to be focused while targeting data science. Thus data puts a significant burden on research institutes because it is the authority that decides the responsible for the whole course of the procedure. It is of prime importance for data science librarians serving in data-centric age to know regarding LIS principles, theories, and other related skills that are mandatory for management and support of data science. This paper sums up the reviews of researchers regarding the data science era. Moreover, this paper includes …

The volume of scientific data is growing exponentially across all scientific disciplines. Competent information professionals are needed to sort, catalog, store, and retrieve this data for future research and education requirements. In response to this need, the goal of the Data Curation Education in Research Centers (DCERC) project is to develop curriculum to educate information science students in the critical field of scientific data curation. Three masters degree students at University of Tennessee (UT) and three doctoral students at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign are completing year one of the program. Each brings to the field of data curation skills …

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Recently, big data investment has become important for organizations, especially with the fast growth of data following the huge expansion in the usage of social media applications, and websites. Many organizations depend on extracting and reaching the needed reports and statistics. As the investments on big data and its storage have become major challenges for organizations, many technologies and methods have been developed to tackle those challenges.
One of such technologies is Hadoop, a framework that is used to divide big data into packages and distribute those packages through nodes to be processed, consuming less cost than the traditional storage …

This presentation was delivered at the IOLUG conference-Tackling Data in Libraries: Opportunities and Challenges in Serving User Communities in Indianapolis, IN in May 2019. Data literacy is critical for today’s college graduates. Data science education is fundamentally an interdisciplinary endeavor. Since summer 2018, the presenters, information professionals from the libraries, have been working with instructors from Philosophy and Computer and Electrical Engineering to develop three interlocking one-credit courses at the Midwest, public research university, Purdue University. Spring 2019, the courses are offered to engineering sophomore and junior students to explore three key areas of data literacy: management; ethics; and analysis. …

Data Management Services
In 2015, the Albertsons Library’s Research Data Management Group established a 2-year strategic agenda which focused on increasing library service capacity, establishing partnerships with other campus stakeholders, and creating the technical infrastructure needed to ensure proper management of university research data assets. To inform this work during the next two year period, the group conducted an environmental scan of campus data management needs and activities. The survey was also designed to help other university administrators and campus partners understand the current state of research data, identify unmet needs, and highlight opportunities for increasing institutional capacity.
