Over the past year, the University of Rhode Island (URI) has taken some steps towards shifting the default to Open Access for both faculty scholarship and student work. First and foremost, in March 2013, the URI Faculty Senate passed a Harvard-style Open Access mandate. And in February 2013, the Library and the Graduate School began making electronic dissertations and theses openly available through URI’s institutional repository. In this presentation, we will define Open Access policies and discuss why they are important. We will give an overview of our experiences with Open Access advocacy, implementation of policies, and next steps.

Two Approaches To Collaborative Information Literacy Instruction At A Small Engineering School, Conor Cote, Scott Juskiewicz
Library
Two librarians at a small STEM academic library have partnered with professors to develop and teach chemistry and writing courses. These librarians have successfully worked with professors to serve as an active presence within the classroom. This article describes the challenges of navigating the typical obstacles librarians face when attempting to integrate information literacy into the curriculum, reflects on the benefits of these collaborations, and touches on strategies for implementing similar programs at other institutions. It outlines two distinct approaches to collaborating with professors on credit-bearing information literacy courses, along with the key steps involved in planning and implementing these …

Taking Face-To-Face Library Workshops For Freshman Online, Anne Grant, Diana Finkle

As the needs of academic library users evolve, so must the ways that librarians chose to interact with those users. A great deal of energy has been spent focusing on the first-year student in the university setting, but is this the best focal point for instructional efforts? After an extensive brainstorming session, the librarians at Clemson University decided to refocus time and energy from the first-year students to upper-class students and faculty. That’s not to say that this very important group of students was ignored, but the face-to-face sessions that had been provided to incoming students was shifted to online …

In 2011, the GW School of Medicine decided to change from a traditional curriculum for the M.D. program to an integrated, systems-based curriculum. Students will move from a traditional 2x2 curriculum (2 pre-clinical years and 2 clinical years) to one in which they complete their pre-clinical training in 18 months followed by 2 1/2 years clinical training. The purpose of this poster is to highlight the ways in which Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library librarians were engaged in and helped with this transition.

In October 2013, George Washington University's School of Public Health and Health Services (now the Milken Institute School of Public Health) approached the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library about moving a large collection of Health Policy Department publications and citations from the school's website into the Health Sciences Research Commons (HSRC) institutional repository. After a project planning meeting with the school's representative, library staff began uploading documents and citations from the collection. Working from a spreadsheet and file set provided by the school, library staff processed 604 citations (including 319 full-text files) dating back to 1996. Despite some problem files and …

Importance Of School Library Programs, Cynthia Strong
Importance Of School Library Programs, Cynthia Strong
SPU Works
Within the discipline of library science, over 20 research studies have been done in the United States attesting to how high-quality school library programs contribute to improved academic achievement. On the other hand, in the fields of education, school counseling, administration, and school leadership, and so on, there is a dearth of scholarship and recognition of the positive impact librarians and library media program have on student success. This conceptual paper first presents an overview of the empirical research on school library programs and the positive impact they have on the academic achievement of students in the United States. Many libraries these days rely on the free promotional opportunities presented by social media. Albertsons Library at Boise State is no exception; however, we have found that we can extend the outreach capabilities of social media by using the same themes, images and/or messages on a slide show that runs on all the computers in the library, as well as a monitor in the library lobby. This article will examine concepts in user engagement and branding as the foundation to the successful use of this marketing tool, and also offer tips specific to setting up and designing your own slideshow.

Information literacy is a set of skills that includes recognizing an information need, locating and retrieving the needed information, analyzing the information, and using the information for a specific task. As sources for information continue to expand, students need to develop these skills so that they not only succeed in their professional careers, but also make well-informed decisions in their day-to-day lives. Information literacy has been identified as an important skill set by faculty of all disciplines, administrators, and accrediting agencies. Therefore, the University Library is exploring ways to assess these skills, which will allow departments and programs the ability …
