Between Land And Sea: Divergent Data Stewardship Practices In Deep-Sea Biosphere Research, Rebekah Cummings, Peter Darch

Rebekah Cummings

Data in deep-sea biosphere research often live a double life. While the original data generated on IODP expeditions are highly structured, professionally curated, and widely shared, the downstream data practices of deep-sea biosphere laboratories are far more localized and ad hoc. These divergent data practices make it difficult to track the provenance of datasets from the cruise ships to the laboratory or to integrate IODP data with laboratory data. An in-depth study of the divergent data practices in deep-sea biosphere research allows us to: - Better understand the social and technical forces that shape data stewardship throughout the data lifecycle; …

As funding agencies require data management plans (DMP) and data sharing, institutions are developing data services in their libraries. Data services may include data curation, including metadata creation and data preservation; data discovery, such as data set registration and data linking; extended references services, such as DMP consultations and data needs assessments; and internal activities, such as environmental scans and support for institutional/data repositories. The panel will discuss the evolution, status, and future of data services development in their respective institutions including: The status of data services development in their institution The steps taken to get to their current stage …

Managing Research Data : A Collaborative Approach, Darren Gibson, Julia Gross, Matthew Wyatt Jul 2013

Managing Research Data : A Collaborative Approach, Darren Gibson, Julia Gross, Matthew Wyatt

Darren Gibson

To ensure maximum benefit is achieved from the investigations in a collaborative research network, it is essential that research data is managed effectively. However, there is no set model to follow. Normally an institution will establish its own policy and procedures applicable to their researchers and data. This causes difficulties for researchers sharing data across a collaborative network. Edith Cowan University (ECU) is one of fifteen Australian universities striving to create world-class research capacity and capability through investment in the Collaborative Research Network (CRN) project. The CRN project at ECU aims to accelerate the growth of research activity from 2011 …

Data Management Planning Consultation Workshop, Lisa Zilinski

Lisa Zilinski

This workshop was presented to Purdue Libraries Faculty. Participants will be informed of the general DMP requirements to describe them to a faculty member. Participants will be able to identify the qualities that comprise an effective DMP. Participants will be able to identify resources and tools that can be applied in crafting a DMP. Participants will be able to identify individuals in the Libraries who they can contact for assistance.

Data Reuse And Scholarly Reward: Understanding Practice And Building Infrastructure, Todd J. Vision, Heather A. Piwowar Apr 2013

Data Reuse And Scholarly Reward: Understanding Practice And Building Infrastructure, Todd J. Vision, Heather A. Piwowar

DataONE Sociocultural and Usability & Assessment Working Groups

Recently introduced funding agency policies seek to increase the availability of data from individual published studies for reuse by the research community at large. The success of such policies can be measured both by data input (“is useful data being made available?”) and research output (“are these data being reused by others?”). A key determinant of data input is the extent to which data producers receive adequate professional credit for making data available. One of us (HP) previously reported a large citation difference for published microarray studies with and without data available in a public repository. Analysis of a much …

How Information Science Professionals Add Value In A Scientific Research Center, Chris Eaker, Andrea Thomer, Erica Johns, Kayla Siddell Jan 2013

How Information Science Professionals Add Value In A Scientific Research Center, Chris Eaker, Andrea Thomer, Erica Johns, Kayla Siddell

DataONE Sociocultural and Usability & Assessment Working Groups

In response to the increasing need for a data curation workforce, the Data Curation Education in Research Centers program is educating library and information science students in scientific data curation. During the summer of 2012, the authors worked alongside scientists and data managers at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, to learn data curation within the context of a research center. Each student was matched with a “Science Mentor” and a “Data Mentor” based on prior work experience and the results of a placement questionnaire completed before the internship. Though NCAR has robust data services, we found …

This column describes curricular enhancements at one School of Library and Information Science in the United States. Several key areas of data management in which health sciences librarians may wish to build or enhance their skills are outlined. Possible roles and opportunities for health sciences librarians to strategically engage in data management initiatives are also presented.

When Data Curation Isn’T: A Redefinition For Liberal Arts Universities, Megan Toups, Michael J. Hughes Jan 2013

When Data Curation Isn’T: A Redefinition For Liberal Arts Universities, Megan Toups, Michael J. Hughes

Library Faculty Research

Data curation is one way that libraries are extending traditional services to meet the changing needs of patrons. Requirements from research funders have placed increased pressure on grant recipients to create Data Management Plans and to securely store raw data. Research universities have stepped up to provide comprehensive data support services. Despite discrepancies in funding and staff, smaller institutions can similarly provide robust services by focusing on their strengths, such as interdepartmental collaboration, flexibility, and rapid turnaround time. This article details how librarians at Trinity University adapted the larger practice of curation to meet local data management needs.

Data Management And Sharing From The Perspective Of Graduate Students: An Examination Of Culture And Practice At The Water Quality Field Station, Jake R. Carlson, Marianne S. Bracke

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Libraries are actively seeking to identify and respond to the data management and curation needs of researchers. One important perspective in this area that is often overlooked is that of graduate students. This case study uses the Data Curation Profile Toolkit to interview six graduate students working for Agronomy researchers at the Water Quality Field Station (WQFS) research lab to understand the students’ practices with data, the challenges they face, and their attitudes towards managing and sharing data. Though a small study, this research could provide new insights for libraries creating data services, particularly in regards to graduate students.
