San Francisco Declaration On Research Assessment (Dora), The American Society For Cell Biology
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
There is a pressing need to improve the ways in which the output of scientific research is evaluated by funding agencies, academic institutions, and other parties. To address this issue, a group of editors and publishers of scholarly journals met during the Annual Meeting of The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) in San Francisco, CA, on December 16, 2012. The group developed a set of recommendations, referred to as the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment. We invite interested parties across all scientific disciplines to indicate their support by adding their names to this Declaration. The outputs from scientific research …

School Environmental Factors And Mathematics Teaching Effectiveness: Implication For E-Learning, Sikiru A. Amoo, Akeem B. Disu
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Mathematics occupies a central position in the school curriculum. It is a core subject from the primary through the junior secondary to the senior secondary school levels of the educational system. This important position occupied by the subject in the school curricula is borne out of the role of mathematics in scientific and technological development, a sine-qua-non in national building. However, the teaching of this important subject is beset with problems of societal values for it, there is the problem of inadequate and substandard learning materials and general attitudes among others. Therefore, the study investigated the pre-professional mathematics teachers’ beliefs …

Evaluation Of Entrepreneurship Awareness And Skills Among Lis Students In Universities In South East Nigeria, Felicia Ugwu, C.N. Ezeani
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The study examined the entrepreneurship awareness and skills among Library and Information Science (LIS) students in two Nigerian Universities. In Nigeria, the overcrowded job market is forcing thousands of graduates into unemployment and its associated consequences of kidnapping, drug addiction, youth restiveness and general poor standard of living. This has made it imperative that graduates be equipped with skills that are required to achieve self-reliance. With appropriate skills, LIS students as information professionals will be at the vanguard of information generation and reaping its employment opportunities in libraries, companies and corporate organizations. Specifically examined in this paper were the level …

Blogging the Library
I cannot believe that this semester is over, and my internship at the library. This semester has been a immensely rewarding experience for me. From the wonderful librarians I had the opportunity to work with to the different aspects of librarianship I was able to discover, I am so grateful for the opportunity. This experience has made me 100% sure that I want to become a librarian and I cannot wait to get started. I'm filling out graduate school applications over winter break. Fingers crossed to see which programs I get into. [excerpt]

Data Curation Is For Everyone! The Case For Master's And Baccalaureate Institutional Engagement With Data Curation, Yasmeen Shorish
Libraries
This article describes the fundamental challenges to data curation, how these challenges may be compounded for smaller institutions, and how data management is an essential and manageable component of data curation. Data curation is often discussed within the confines of large research universities. As a result, master's and baccalaureate institutions may be left with the impression that they cannot engage with data curation. However, by proactively engaging with faculty, libraries of all sizes can build closer relationships and help educate faculty on data documentation and organizational best practices. This article describes experiences from one master's comprehensive institution as it engages …

Borrow Or Buy? Cost-Effective Delivery Of Monographs, James Van Fleet, Jennifer Clarke
Borrow Or Buy? Cost-Effective Delivery Of Monographs, James Van Fleet, Jennifer Clarke
Jennifer Clarke
In an effort to reduce Interlibrary borrowing activity, while enhancing the Library collection, the Bertrand Library has initiated a program to purchase current monographs requested through ILL by Bucknell University students and faculty. The results have been a successful reduction in ILL workload, and a cost-effective means of document delivery as measured by average delivery time, cost-per-title, processing costs, and circulation statistics. This procedure reflects an overall change in our philosophy concerning document access and delivery, which led to the reorganization of ILL services and staff in the Bertrand Library.

Home Pages Of Ten Leading Global-Asian Academic Library Websites, Safie Tahmasebi Limoni, Mitra Ghiasi, Ali A. Razavi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
A website’s homepage is a gate to its content, and accuracy of structure is important. This is especially more important on academic library websites that are places for searching for general and specific information.
This is based on a survey-comparative method using researcher-made checklists. The population consists of ten leading global-Asian academic library websites confirmed by webometry site. Findings include three factors: search engine available on the first page (P = 0.000), available page for electronic resources separately (P = 0.003), image attraction (P = 0.002), and the bond between a library webpage and non-academic libraries (P = 0.001). There …

Feel like you’re using social media on behalf of your library “just because” and to an unresponsive audience? Think of a great party host. They plan the party and provide a welcoming space. Maybe they even incentivize you to attend and participate. Great hosts also take the time to check how their guests are doing, respond to needs and complaints, and adjust the party to accommodate future attendees. Learn how one library revamped its social media by thinking like a socialite party host. Katy Kelly, Communications and Outreach Librarian at University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio, will describe her use of …

Tuning In To The Needs Of International Students, Elizabeth Ramsey
Tuning In To The Needs Of International Students, Elizabeth Ramsey
Library Faculty Publications and Presentations
The objectives of this presentation were to increase awareness of the growing international student population at Boise State University and offer tips on how best to serve them. International students often have very different educational backgrounds which affect their perceptions of what the library can do for them. By being aware of the cultural differences and other barriers to effective communication, public services staff at the library may be better situated to help international students meet their educational goals.

Communications in Information Literacy
Librarians teach. It might not be what they planned to do when they entered the profession, or it may have been a secret hope all along. Either way, librarians teach, and one teaching scenario remains quintessential: the one-shot library instruction session. In recognition of the centrality of the "one-shot," this article shares several authors' "notes from the field." The notes provide a range of strategies for developing pedagogically sound one-shot library instruction sessions, grouped loosely into three categories: planning, delivery, and integration. The authors offer these insights in their own words in hopes that other teaching librarians may benefit from …

Information Literacy On The Web: How College Students Use Visual And Textual Cues To Assess Credibility On Health Websites, Katrina L. Pariera
Communications in Information Literacy
One of the most important literacy skills in today's information society is the ability to determine the credibility of online information. Users sort through a staggering number of websites while discerning which will provide satisfactory information. In this study, 70 college students assessed the credibility of health websites with a low and high design quality, in either low or high credibility groups. The study's purpose was to understand if students relied more on textual or visual cues in determining credibility, and to understand if this affected their recall of those cues later. The results indicate that when viewing a high …
