Mobile Technologies & Academics: Do Students Use Mobile Technologies In Their Academic Lives And Are Librarians Ready To Meet This Challenge?, Angela L. Dresselhaus, Flora Shrode

Mansfield Library Faculty Publications

Results from the first survey helped us to gain insight into where students at Utah State University (USU) in Logan, Utah, stand regarding their use of mobile devices for academic activities in general and their desire for access to library services and resources in particular. A second survey, conducted with librarians, gave us an idea of the extent to which responding libraries offer mobile access, their future plans for mobile implementation, and …

The authors present their experiences implementing Summon, a web-based search engine similar to Google produced by the software company Serial Solutions, at Bowling Green State (BGSU) University Libraries (UL). The authors discuss using the teaching method of reflection, described by Char Booth in the book "Reflective Teaching, Effective Learning: Instructional Literacy for Library Educators," to train librarians, students, and faculty to use the software. The authors describe personal and group instruction, training undergraduates to use Summon for research, and alternative search tools such as the EBSCO Publishing database.

Incorporating Millennium Catalog Records Into Serials Solutions' Summon, Jeffrey Daniels, Patrick Roth Jun 2012

Incorporating Millennium Catalog Records Into Serials Solutions' Summon, Jeffrey Daniels, Patrick Roth

Scholarly Papers and Articles

Grand Valley State University implemented the web scale discovery system, Summon from Serials Solutions, in August of 2009. The decision was made to use Summon search as the only search box on the library home page. This fueled the desire to ensure that the Grand Valley State University local catalog was included in the Summon index. The inclusion of these records caused many issues that had to be addressed and worked through, including daily updates and incorrect data. In this article the authors share their experiences and discuss solutions to issues faced during and after the implementation.
