A recent survey of Wichita State University faculty, staff, and students by the WSU Libraries shows the university community far from consensus on the issue of print versus electronic journals and other resources. The survey, made available to the entire campus via the Web, provides an in-depth look at the importance of materials in different formats, how print and electronic journals are located and used, the interest in alternative delivery methods, and the level of support for canceling subscriptions or buying fewer books to maintain or add electronic access. "Information Literacy in Science & Technology Disciplines" is a presentation given as part of the 2005 ACRL preconference, “Information Literacy in the Disciplines: Librarian/Faculty Collaboration for 21st Century Research Skills.” The purpose of the presentation was to give preconference attendees a background that would assist in facilitating discussions of methods of collaborating with faculty to develop library instruction that addresses information literacy standards relevant to specific disciplines.

I have seen the future arrive several different times and in a number of different settings. It arrives in the form of new technologies. Initial progress is slow, and accompanied by a certain amount of frustration. But new conveniences emerge, and they eventually change the most basic levels and details of how things get done. Continuity is key. You have to have a good strong sense of what you are trying to get done. If you don’t, the technology threatens to take over.
