Resources And Services For Remote Access: A Content Analysis Of Alabama’S Public Four-Year University Library Web Sites, Hanrong Wang, William Hubbard

The Southeastern Librarian

This study examines the web sites of the sixteen Alabama public senior colleges and universities in order to identify the principle characteristics and current trends in web-based services. Because web sites are evolving constantly, the study intends to make a static comparison of web-based resources and services provided by those libraries at a fixed point in time. Besides identifying trends in library web sites, this study will serve as a benchmark for comparisons of future web-based developments and for improving existing services and resources in the subject libraries.

In 1994, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) Libraries founded a College Librarian Program. Begun with four librarians serving four colleges, it has since grown to include eleven librarians providing comprehensive library services to the six of Virginia Tech's eight colleges not served by branch libraries. Fee-based information services in libraries will face many challenges in continuing to offer value-added, cost-effective services to customers daring the opening decade of the new millennium. Some of the challenges are similar to those faced by other library units, but others are unique. "The Homosexual" As Problem Patron, Polly Thistlethwaite

Libraries host a range of human activity, some of which is overtly sexual. What's a librarian to do about public displays of affection? cruising? public sex? First, we read up on the issue. Unfortunately, problem patron library literature is spotted with vivid illustrations of irrational bias against gay men, male-to-female transgender women, and men-cruising-men. It also discounts the private nature of most consensual sex in public places. This article discusses sex and gender biases in library literature, arguing that gender equitable, privacy-respecting practices will better serve librarians administering public space.
