Upgrading Search Strategy Skills: Unit Three: Developing Search Strategies For Searching Some Of The Indexes Of The World Wide Web: A Continuing Professional Development For Library And Information Service Managers, Gulten S. Wagner

Research outputs pre 2011

This Unit is designed to provide information professionals with some basic search skills in searching the indexes of the World Wide Web (WWW). The WWW can accessed through the public Internet. WWW's resources are organised to provide easy access to users by means of formatted texts, sound, images and other links. This unit will concentrate on some of the better developed search engines of the WWW. It will enable the participants to design Boolean logic-based search strategies to retrieve required information.

The World Wide Web, was put together through a series of protocols developed by Tim Berners-Lee at the European …

Postings On A Genre Of E-Mail, Michael Spooner, Kathleen Yancey Jan 1996

Postings On A Genre Of E-Mail, Michael Spooner, Kathleen Yancey

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

I was talking with a novelist recently about various kinds of writing-nothing special, just happy-hour talk-and I found my earnest self assuring him that, oh yes, academic writing nowadays will tolerate a number of different styles and voices. (I should know, right? I'm in academic publishing.) He choked; he slapped my arm; he laughed out loud. I don't remember if he spit his drink back in the glass. Silly me, I was serious. And, among other things, I was thinking about this essay/dialogue, in which we're turning discourse conventions of the net - often a rather casual medium - to …

Upgrading Search Strategy Skills: Unit Two: Developing Search Strategies For Cd-Rom Encylopedias: A Continuing Professional Development Course For Library And Information Service Managers, Gulten S. Wagner

Research outputs pre 2011

This Unit Two focuses on the development of search strategies in using CD-ROM encyclopedias. A thorough introduction to the basics of searching with Boolean logical operators is provided in Unit One. CD-ROM encyclopedia publishers not only update their products annually but some now provide monthly online updating facilities from the Internet. In this very dynamic environment it is rather difficult to evaluate their search facilities as improvements take place constantly.

The Unit develops strategies to take full advantage of the text and multimedia materials stored in the various indexes of an electronic encyclopedia, as well as methods for evaluating the …

Bliss: The Man And The Classification, John A. Drobnicki Jan 1996

Bliss: The Man And The Classification, John A. Drobnicki

Publications and Research

This paper discusses the career of Henry Evelyn Bliss, founder of the Bibliographic Classification, which is currently being revised. Dissatisfied with the current classification systems, Bliss devised his own, which was based on a main class order that provided for collocation of related classes. Although not currently used in the United States, the Bibliographic Classification continues to be utilized by approximately 50 libraries in the United Kingdom. Advantages and criticisms are presented for Bliss's system, which is often praised in library science textbooks, yet seldom used as the trend in libraries has been to either the Dewey Decimal or the …

Is Library Automation Feasible For All Elementary Schools?, Tiffany Bayless Jan 1996

Is Library Automation Feasible For All Elementary Schools?, Tiffany Bayless

Graduate Research Papers

Library automation has been adopted by many library media centers, but is it appropriate for all libraries? The justification for automation of four library media centers will be based on the literature reviewed, current operations of these centers, and personal experiences and observations in working with these library media centers. There have been many concerns about whether library automation is feasible for these library media centers, and that is the reason for the focus of this study. Library automation should not be something that is implemented just because "everyone else is doing it".

Remembrances Of William D. Murphy, Margaret A. Leary Jan 1996

Remembrances Of William D. Murphy, Margaret A. Leary

Articles

In mid-1988, as the time for me to assume the presidency of AALL at the end of the Atlanta meeting approached, the association's first executive director, William Jepson, announced that he would resign soon after the meeting. The presence of adequate staffing at headquarters had been a key element in my decision to run for president, so I was particularly appalled at the idea of the position being empty almost exactly as I took office. Then someone-I like to think it was Babe Russo but I can't remember definitely-suggested that Bill Murphy might be willing to serve as acting executive …

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

This report of the Virtual Library Planning Committee (VLPC) is intending to serve as a blueprint for the University of South Florida (USF) Libraries as it shifts from print to digital formats in its evolution into a "Virtual Library". A comprehensive planning process is essential for the USF Libraries to make optimum use of technology, fulfill their collective missions, and add value to the information resources and services provided. Four key areas are articulated in this plan to guide the implementation process; the content of each of these key areas contains background information, benchmarks, appropriate standards, and selected short and …
