This article describes the fundamental challenges to data curation, how these challenges may be compounded for smaller institutions, and how data management is an essential and manageable component of data curation. Data curation is often discussed within the confines of large research universities. As a result, master's and baccalaureate institutions may be left with the impression that they cannot engage with data curation. However, by proactively engaging with faculty, libraries of all sizes can build closer relationships and help educate faculty on data documentation and organizational best practices. Over the past few years, an increasing number of academic libraries have been adding or supplementing research data management support and services to their offerings. In an effort to support different stakeholders (e.g. students, library faculty and librarians, and disciplinary faculty), Purdue Libraries faculty and staff have developed several different tools and resources specifically designed for librarians and liaisons in supporting research data management. As more researchers look to publish and cite research data, it will be important to link the published data sets to the corresponding articles and technical reports. This lightening talk will discuss the developing collaborations between the Purdue University Libraries, including the Purdue University Press, and the Joint Transportation Research Program (JTRP), a collaboration between Purdue University and Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). Since 2006, the Libraries has been working with JTRP researchers in the production, dissemination, and stewardship of technical reports. Sharing research data and scholarship is of national importance due to the increased focus on maximizing return on the government’s investment in research programs. Recent policy changes have directly affected the management and accessibility of publically-funded research. On January 18, 2011 the National Science Foundation (NSF) required data management plans to be submitted with all grant proposals. On February 22, 2013, the Office of Science and Technology Policy of the President of the United States extended a similar requirement to all federal agencies with research and development budgets of more than $100 million. When Data Curation Isn’T: A Redefinition For Liberal Arts Universities, Megan Toups, Michael Hughes

Data curation is one way that libraries are extending traditional services to meet the changing needs of patrons. Requirements from research funders have placed increased pressure on grant recipients to create Data Management Plans and to securely store raw data. Research universities have stepped up to provide comprehensive data support services. Despite discrepancies in funding and staff, smaller institutions can similarly provide robust services by focusing on their strengths, such as interdepartmental collaboration, flexibility, and rapid turnaround time. This article details how librarians at Trinity University adapted the larger practice of curation to meet local data management needs.
