Other Library Publications and Works
A working group of ASERL librarians designed a survey to assess resource sharing issues and identify best practices. The results will assist ASERL in identifying programming and project areas to support resource sharing. The survey will also produce ILL and resource sharing benchmarks useful for future planning and assessment. The survey inquires into fundamental resource sharing outputs, networks, and technologies. To measure current best practices, the survey also incorporates Rethinking Resource Sharing "STARS" A Checklist Interlibrary Loan Assessment, devised by ALA/RUSA/STARS.

Library professionals are looking for new ways to measure and express the value of their libraries to their parent institutions and to measure how well they meet the rapidly changing needs and expectations of their users. They need both to find the best ways to meet patron needs and to communicate the value of their operations to administrators and funders. Developing a strategy to help libraries attain these goals is the focus of the Value, Outcomes, and Return on Investment of Academic Libraries project, “Lib-Value” for short. Funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), …

With the release of the 2.0 Beta, Zotero has taken powerful personal bibliographic management software to the next level, making the open-source program a legitimate alternative to for-profit products such as RefWorks and EndNote. It utilizes a simple iTunes™–like interface within the Firefox web browser that gives users the ability to easily download and manipulate bibliographic information with a single click from most popular websites and databases. For more advanced users, Zotero has the potential to be a powerful information management system that incorporates the best features of Web 2.0. The …

With fancy new software developments and growth in both the richness of content and delivery options for information resources, the Database Marketplace 2010 is a feast for buyers. Unfortunately, institutional budget cuts may force more of a famine mentality--with belt-tightening for most, and only purchases that are life-sustaining being served in many libraries.

Consider the impact of abundance, coupled with connections, on newspapers. The ability to deal with large amounts of digital text and graphics, reaching millions of people quickly, and the low cost of providing digital access have diminished the appeal of traditional newspapers. Readers and advertisers alike can now look to scores of alternative competitors.

Privacy And Generation Y: Applying Library Values To Social Networking Sites, Peter Fernandez
Other Library Publications and Works
Librarians face many challenges when dealing with issues of privacy within the mediated space of social networking sites. Conceptually, social networking sites differ from libraries on privacy as a value. Research about Generation Y students, the primary clientele of undergraduate libraries, can inform librarians’ relationship to this important emerging technology. Five recommendations assist librarians in expanding their traditional commitment to privacy into the realm of social networking sites.

These are prime examples of how SIS faculty are pioneering new thinking in their classrooms and in their research.

The Online Information Meeting each December in London is one of the last remaining conferences dedicated to e-resources in libraries. As such, it was somewhat surprising that few sessions this year focused on features or functionality of the latest products for libraries. Instead, the library track dealt almost entirely with measuring and demonstrating the value of the library to increase (or maintain) funding.
