Meeting Strategic Communication Goals Through A Sustainable Library Newsletter, Camielle Crampsie, Karla Morris Jan 2021

Meeting Strategic Communication Goals Through A Sustainable Library Newsletter, Camielle Crampsie, Karla Morris

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

Libraries face a significant challenge in keeping users, and sometimes even
their own employees, informed and up-to-date about their ever-changing services and resources. A library e-newsletter is one way of effectively communicating updates to a large number of people on a regular basis, serving as both an internal and external communication tool. To do this, it is important to establish a collaborative model that is sustainable, can be assessed, and meets readership needs. Aligning the newsletter with the library’s mission and strategic plan is an effective approach for communications with an academic library community.

Academic Librarian Publishing Productivity: An Analysis Of Skills And Behaviors Leading To Success, Camielle Crampsie, Tina Neville, Deborah B. Henry

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

Scholarly publishing continues to be a prominent expectation for many academic librarians. This survey explores characteristics, behaviors, motivations, institutional supports, and educational opportunities that help library practitioners become successful authors. It also looks at perceived confidence in research skills of both novice and experienced librarians. Many librarians show confidence in research activities related to their overall job assignments (literature searching, writing, and such) but find more sophisticated research skills, such as statistical analysis, more challenging. Findings indicate that having additional graduate research experience beyond the library degree, time-management skills, and collaboration with other researchers may provide useful benefits.

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

INTRODUCTION: When U.S. News & World Report announced that it would rank law schools’ scholarly impact, U.S. News asked law schools to work with HeinOnline, a legal database, to ensure the accuracy of the database-created faculty author profiles because they would be using Hein’s database to gather citation metrics to measure scholarly impact. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: This practice article describes a project at UNC Chapel Hill in the law library to ensure that their faculty publications were included in HeinOnline’s database and that HeinOnline Author Profiles were accurate. This case study helps librarians tackling either similar law library projects or …

From Journal Selection To Open Access: Practices Among Academic Librarian Scholars, Tina Neville, Camielle Crampsie Jan 2019

From Journal Selection To Open Access: Practices Among Academic Librarian Scholars, Tina Neville, Camielle Crampsie

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

In this study, researchers surveyed academic librarians about their open access publishing practices. This analysis explores approaches to journal selection, awareness of open access options, and self-archiving practices. Fifty percent of the librarians in this study considered free open access when selecting a potential journal for publication, but a journal's fit to the topic and peer review were higher priorities. Findings indicate that, although many librarians publish in open access journals or take advantage of institutional repositories, there are still barriers to publishing in open access journals, including article processing charges, the tenure and promotion culture, and uncertainty around intellectual …

Exploring Data Literacy Via A Librarian-Faculty Learning Community: A Case Study, Theresa G. Burress, Emily Z. Mann, Tina Neville

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

Faculty learning communities (FLCs) are year-long professional development opportunities available at many higher education institutions in the United States. While the literature reflects some librarian engagement with FLCs, it seems limited primarily to areas of traditional librarian expertise such as information literacy and outreach. This article describes a case study of a librarian-facilitated FLC focused on data literacy, which resulted in the development of a teaching toolkit, library-led data literacy instruction, and ongoing collaborations between librarians and faculty. The FLC structure proved to be a valuable framework that facilitated collaborative learning in topics relevant to both disciplinary faculty and librarians. …

Debris, Diatoms, And Dolphins: Tracking Child Engagement At A Public Science Festival, Kaya Van Beynen, Theresa G. Burress

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

Visitors to public science festivals have a tremendous amount of free choice to decide how to navigate through the festival, as well as when, where, and how long to stop at an exhibit. This study examines how elementary-aged children individually or collaboratively engaged with festival exhibits at a public science festival in St. Petersburg, Florida. Although many exhibit activities are designed to appeal to children, no research has been done with regard to child engagement with one-day, outdoor science festivals, such as this one. Engagement can be measured by unobtrusive observation of the behavior and interactions of children. Factors that …

Preserving, Digitizing, And Sustaining The Weekly Challenger, A Local African-American Newspaper., Catherine A. Cardwell, Alexandra Curran

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

A local newspaper in Saint Petersburg, Florida, The Weekly Challenger was established in 1967 with the goal of documenting and sharing information about the African-American community at a time when other local news outlets largely ignored it. Through a special legislative appropriation from the State of Florida, the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library at the University of South Florida Saint Petersburg received funding to preserve, digitize, and sustain the newspaper. In this article, the authors discuss the steps taken to build the repository for the newspaper’s print and electronic archives, including photographs and videotaped interviews with a long-time publisher. Career Plateauing Among Senior Librarians., Tina M. Neville, Deborah B. Henry

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

Using an online survey and semi-structured interviews, senior academic librarians were asked to reflect on the factors that keep them personally fulfilled and on how they remain motivated to make positive contributions to their organization. Motivations include esteem of colleagues and supervisors, variety in their work, salary, opportunities to learn new skills, increasing responsibility, and working with students and faculty. 59% percent of the survey respondents ranked their job satisfaction at 8 (on a scale of 1—10, with 10 the most satisfied). Using Bardwick’s definitions of plateauing, 60% of the 20 librarians interviewed did not feel that they were content-plateaued.

Analyzing The Data Management Environment In A Master's-Level Institution., Anthony Stamatoplos, Tina M. Neville, Deborah Boran Henry Jan 2016

Analyzing The Data Management Environment In A Master's-Level Institution., Anthony Stamatoplos, Tina M. Neville, Deborah Boran Henry

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

The data management environments at research-intensive institutions have been studied extensively. Few studies, however, have assessed the environments at institutions that are not classified as research-intensive, where scholarship and obtaining external funding is still highly encouraged. Using results from semi-structured interviews with faculty from an array of disciplines, the authors describe the research processes and data concerns at a Master's-level institution. A comparison of the results illustrate that, at least at this institution, faculty face very similar issues as those identified at research-intensive organizations and many of the same practices and services could be implemented on a smaller scale.

Exploring Peer-To-Peer Library Content And Engagement On A Student-Run Facebook Group, Kaya Van Beynen, Camielle Crampsie

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

Student-run Facebook groups offer librarians a new means of interacting with students in their native digital domain. Facebook groups, a service launched in 2010 enables university students to create a virtual forum to discuss their concerns, issues, and promote events. While still a relatively new feature, these groups are increasingly being utilized by students in universities and colleges throughout North America. Little research has been done on these groups and how they may be changing the way that students interact with each other and with their university on social media. A student-run university Facebook group was monitored for a year …

Evaluating Scholarly Book Publishers—A Case Study In The Field Of Journalism., Tina M. Neville, Deborah Boran Henry

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

By adapting multiple metrics used for journal article evaluation and replicating recent publisher metrics, the authors tested methods for evaluating scholarly book publishers. Using monographs published in journalism between 2007 and 2011 as a test case, results indicate these methods may be useful to other scholarly disciplines.
