Information Resources In Interdisciplinary Writing Program (Iwp) Courses: Winter And Spring 1998, Anne E. Zald, Nana Lowell
Library Faculty Publications
The University of Washington (UW) Interdisciplinary Writing Program (IWP) provides five-credit expository writing courses each of which is linked to a discipline-based lecture course. Students enroll in both the writing and discipline-based courses, and complementary assignments allow them to improve their writing skills within a subject area of their own particular interest. In Winter and Spring of 1998, the UW UWired program sponsored a pilot program adding librarian-taught class sessions to existing IWP courses. These sessions focused on the use of information resources in the context of student research for writing assignments. Post-course questionnaires were composed primarily of items drawn …

Assessing Libraries In Support Of Campus Missions, Patricia Iannuzzi
Assessing Libraries In Support Of Campus Missions, Patricia Iannuzzi
Library Faculty Presentations
I’ve chosen to address the educational role of the library. There are many other facets of library programs and services that are an integral part of the campus mission -- such as building collections that support research and teaching - but in continuing Rita’s focus on access vs. ownership, and balancing the functions of collection development with connection development - our role as educators also continues to evolve from point of use instruction - to classroom instruction - from teaching library research skills to teaching information literacy skills.

Internet Resources: Expanding The Reference Power Of The Architectural Library, Jeanne M. Brown
Internet Resources: Expanding The Reference Power Of The Architectural Library, Jeanne M. Brown
Library Faculty Publications
Architects have varied and eclectic needs for information. Some types of information are needed repeatedly. Some types are needed only occasionally. A university branch library or a firm library attempts to handle the ongoing needs with in-house resources. As for the occasional need, space and financial considerations have necessitated a reliance on larger libraries, a situation which works with varying degrees of success.
So it has been until now. Now the Internet is starting to change the ground rules. I say STARTING, for several reasons. First, many libraries and firms do not yet have access to the Internet. Second, awareness …

- The article offers advice on developing an instruction program in the multifile online public access catalog (OPAC) environment in a systematic manageable way. Several areas that emerged as basic to an instruction program for multifile OPAC include selection criteria for various databases and search concept relevant across databases. It cites some reasons behind the need for remote database searching including finding citations to materials not at the home library. It suggests approaches for initial exploration of a system.

There are many means of finding one's way around the Internet. Gopher, Veronica, and WAIS are just some of the search mechanisms currently in place. For the beginner, however, the Internet can be overwhelming in the wealth of its resources and in the multiplicity of its organization.
