The Ethics Of Fake Reference, Wayne Bivens-Tatum Sep 2012

The Ethics Of Fake Reference, Wayne Bivens-Tatum

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

A common assignment in introductory reference classes these days requires library school students to ask questions of a virtual reference service—usually not at their own university library—and evaluate their encounter. Often they are instructed to ask a question that might be of genuine interest to them, but there is no way to guarantee that the students even have a question of interest, leading in some cases to students asking random questions of these services. Regardless, such assignments might benefit the instructors and students, but they do so at the expense of librarians. One such interaction led to an ethical analysis …

Reserve Textbooks: To Buy, Or Not To Buy?, Julie Middlemas, Patricia Morrison, Nadra Farina-Hess

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

There is convincing evidence that academic libraries are used less frequently for research than in the past, due to the advent of the Internet. This begs the question: what role does the current library have for students? It can be argued that we simply need to convince students and faculty of library viability, or, another route would be to give students what they are asking for. And textbooks, via course reserves, are what they request most at Grossmont College. Collection development policies typically contain some verbiage that equates to “the library does not collect textbooks, unless they are donated by …

Up From Under The “Open Access” Bus, Paul Royster Sep 2012

Up From Under The “Open Access” Bus, Paul Royster

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

For most of the past seven years I had thought I was working to promote open access to academic scholarship and creative works. I helped place more than 40,000 articles and documents in a freely accessible repository, from which they could be (and were) browsed, downloaded, saved, printed, and linked to.

But I find now that these efforts failed to meet the standards of the open access advocates as represented by (among others) SPARC, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, a library membership organization formed and sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries. As was made excruciatingly clear at …

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

The British, in their worldwide program of colonization, consummated treaties with the indigenous peoples of North America, Africa, Asia, and the Far East and Pacific in a process to administer these acquisitions. The Treaty of Waitangi, 1840 is the primary document illustrating this behavior in New Zealand but, over time, variants of this important instrument have appeared. A text analysis of forty-three of these renditions was performed by applying Levenshtein’s edit distance algorithm.

Table I and Table II (Excel spreadsheets) are attached (below).

Our library publishing efforts are also a model for others, and we are a leader in the development of electronic publishing of open-access academic materials.

Report includes list of accomplishments, analysis of trends, …

A Similarity Threshold-Based Tool For Generating And Assessing Essay Computer-Based Examinations, Olumide B. Longe

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Most computer-based assessments (CBA) employ test generators that produce multiple choice questions usually with our options. The limitations of these types of evaluation are that students can randomly select or guess answers with a 25% chance of choosing the right answer per question. The implication is that there is a one out of four probability that students can pass such examinations without understanding the contents taught in class; without studying for the examination and by just guessing answers. In the light of the foregoing, the effectiveness of multiple choice and objective questions as a tool for evaluating students’ mastery of …
