Peter Fernandez

Presented at the American Library Association 2010 Annual Conference

With the release of the 2.0 Beta, Zotero has taken powerful personal bibliographic management software to the next level, making the open-source program a legitimate alternative to for-profit products such as RefWorks and EndNote. Culturally Relevant Information Literacy, Rob Morrison

Rob Morrison

This paper is a qualitative case study of the role of culture in the information-seeking process. This study revealed that culture does impact how we locate, evaluate and value information and thus specific kinds of knowledge. Librarians and educators must deeply engage in discussions on literacy and how information is tied to knowledge that does not limit learners to the Western worldview. Information Literacy will always be an abstract term until integrated into knowledge production.

Reducing The Reference Collection By 75% In 75 Days: Can It Be Done?, Nora Gaskin, Jeannie An, Wade Wyckoff

Nora Gaskin

When liaison librarians at McMaster heard in summer of 2009 that we had to reduce 14,000 reference titles by 75% by December, we took a proactive approach and formed a steering committee to draft guidelines and procedures. With inspiration from a 2009 ACRL poster session by Dickinson College, we formed a plan. Could twenty very busy liaison librarians accomplish the impossible?

Creative Solutions For Managing Eresources Workflow, Kelly Smith, Laura Edwards

Kelly Smith

As the number of eResources we acquire continues to grow, Eastern Kentucky University Libraries have attempted to develop more effective ways to manage our online collections. Traditional methods for dealing with print resources do not apply to the entire eResources lifecycle, and we have been challenged to think creatively about possible solutions. Our strategies have included adjusting the staffing model of the eResources team, analyzing our workflow using process mapping to identify areas of improvement, and finding appropriate ways to incorporate support staff into the eResources workflow.

Resource Discoverability At The Crossroads, Cheryl D. Walters, Anne Diekema, Liz Woolcott

Cheryl D. Walters

The Internet is changing how people find and use information. Users increasingly are discovering relevant resources outside traditional library systems and expect immediate access to resources at the point of discovery. These changes are challenging traditional thinking on how we should "catalog" and provide access to resources. Panel discussion engaged the audience in a lively discussion of discoverability, trends in user information seeking behavior, the role of librarians in information seeking and finding, and implications for library system design.

Writing Center And Library Collaboration: A Telephone Survey Of Academic Libraries, Lily Todorinova Apr 2010

Writing Center And Library Collaboration: A Telephone Survey Of Academic Libraries, Lily Todorinova

Lily Todorinova

Writing and researching are highly interrelated processes and there is much overlap between the goals and responsibilities of writing center staff and librarians. There is little evidence, however, that partnership between writing centers and libraries has been instituted as standard practice in academic institutions. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to explore the current state of the relationship between the writing center and the library. A telephone survey was administered to librarians in a sample of 268 academic institutions. The results indicated that only 26.7% of libraries actively collaborate which their university’s writing center. A strong majority of the …

Privacy And Generation Y: Applying Library Values To Social Networking Sites, Peter Fernandez Apr 2010

Privacy And Generation Y: Applying Library Values To Social Networking Sites, Peter Fernandez

Peter Fernandez

Librarians face many challenges when dealing with issues of privacy within the mediated space of social networking sites. Conceptually, social networking sites differ from libraries on privacy as a value. Research about Generation Y students, the primary clientele of undergraduate libraries, can inform librarians’ relationship to this important emerging technology. Five recommendations assist librarians in expanding their traditional commitment to privacy into the realm of social networking sites.
