Fan Fiction Metadata Creation And Utilization Within Fan Fiction Archives: Three Primary Models, Shannon Johnson

Issues related to searchability and ease of access have plagued fan fiction since its inception. This paper discusses the predominate forms of fan-mediated indexing and descriptive metadata, commonly referred to as folksonomy or tagging, and compares the benefits and disadvantages of each model. These models fall into three broad categories: free tagging, controlled vocabulary, and hybrid folksonomy. Each model has distinct advantages and shortcomings related to findability, results filtering, and creative empowerment. Examples for each are provided. Possible ramifications to fan fiction from improved metadata and access are also discussed.

Dual credit programs allow high school students to earn college credit for courses that are delivered in school by existing teachers. These programs are gaining popularity nationality and present unique challenges to information literacy instruction in academia, where emphasis is typically placed on freshman composition courses. Composition faculty report that many duel credit students do not demonstrate the same comprehension and skill level as students from conventional university courses. (Bruch & Frank, 2011). Asked to launch a faculty writing circle, our Center joined faculty to shape its mission and give members a “safe space,” a “source of accountability” (Nole, Hart, Soled, 2010), and writing support. We will report on milestones, resulting publications and presentations, library collaboration, and university wide writing initiatives showing the circle's evolution into a community of practice and how it has “harnessed the multiplier effects of collaborative processes...building upon informal networks within entities” (Nagy & Burch, 2009).
