Faculty development centers and libraries share similar missions related to faculty support, as well as a focus on instructional practice. Both are often subject to budget challenges and staffing shortages. How can these similar yet different organizations work together to leverage their areas of expertise towards the same goal? Dual Credit programs are gaining popularity across the country. What impact do these programs have on IL instruction at the university level? This paper explores the challenges dual credit presents and suggests strategies to address them, using data collected from a survey of Indiana librarians.

Fan Fiction Metadata Creation And Utilization Within Fan Fiction Archives: Three Primary Models, Shannon Johnson

Issues related to searchability and ease of access have plagued fan fiction since its inception. This paper discusses the predominate forms of fan-mediated indexing and descriptive metadata, commonly referred to as folksonomy or tagging, and compares the benefits and disadvantages of each model. These models fall into three broad categories: free tagging, controlled vocabulary, and hybrid folksonomy. Each model has distinct advantages and shortcomings related to findability, results filtering, and creative empowerment. Examples for each are provided. Possible ramifications to fan fiction from improved metadata and access are also discussed.

Dual credit programs allow high school students to earn college credit for courses that are delivered in school by existing teachers. These programs are gaining popularity nationality and present unique challenges to information literacy instruction in academia, where emphasis is typically placed on freshman composition courses. Composition faculty report that many duel credit students do not demonstrate the same comprehension and skill level as students from conventional university courses. (Bruch & Frank, 2011). Asked to launch a faculty writing circle, our Center joined faculty to shape its mission and give members a “safe space,” a “source of accountability” (Nole, Hart, Soled, 2010), and writing support. We will report on milestones, resulting publications and presentations, library collaboration, and university wide writing initiatives showing the circle's evolution into a community of practice and how it has “harnessed the multiplier effects of collaborative processes...building upon informal networks within entities” (Nagy & Burch, 2009). By comparing this circle to those at other universities, we also will explore strategies and conditions that stimulate scholarly writing and benefit stakeholders. …

How have our librarians learned to support these technological pioneers (and join in on the fun)? An instructional designer who has provided support to faculty and a librarian who has provided support to students will share their analysis of research findings to unpack McKenzie’s “antidotes” to plagiarism and Howard’s use of patch writing for learning. Implications of the research will include discussion of more recent findings from The Citation Project and an examination of the role of teachers, assignments, and the Wikipedia paradigm in influencing student behaviors.

New technologies offer new opportunities for innovation and engagement. At IPFW, a cohort program put iPads in the hands faculty members and librarians alike. By repurposing trusty library concepts such as information and technological literacy, scholarly communication, and collection curation to fit the paradigm of iPads and apps, we created new collaborations, new educational tools, and a higher profile across our campus. This poster will present the tools we used and the best practices we developed while persuading a new generation of faculty members that teaching, learning, and technology are enhanced when the library is involved.

In this article, the authors share their experiences with the creation and implementation of an online self-paced information literacy instruction for graduate students of nursing. Before You Write: Six Keys to success is a non-credit required online course attached to the Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) graduate nursing program. Library Services and Technology Act Grant (LSTA) Funded for $18,000 For over a century, Girl Scouts has served as a unique and vital part of women’s cultural history in Indiana. The proposed project will involve digitizing that rich history to make it available to current and future Girl Scouts, researchers, historians, and the general public. The materials to be digitized include charter documents for Girl Scout Councils, meeting minutes and notes, newspaper articles, handbooks/activity books, and photographs.
