Marketing & communication in academic libraries is an area that has received growing attention in recent years, with many institutions devoting increased staff time to these efforts; however, most literature focuses on projects at larger institutions. This study surveyed small liberal arts college libraries’ usage of social media & other promotional materials for outreach, communication, & marketing, as well as the staffing levels needed for this work, & documents how it impacted practice at one liberal arts college.

In response to changing desk traffic and shifting librarian responsibilities, Van Wylen Library at Hope College made the decision to change its Research Desk model to one in which undergraduate Research Assistants primarily staff the desk and research librarians are available on call. To best support this modification, the Research Desk supervisors implemented an improved hiring procedure, an updated training program, and a new referral process for research questions at the desk. Initial assessment shows that the model generally works, though we continue to try to improve Research Assistants’ judgment on when to refer questions to librarians and to foster …

Provides an overview of how librarians in the Cataloging and Metadata Services (CAMS) department at the Ball State University Libraries (Muncie, IN) prepared for and implemented cataloging in RDA. Also covers the presenter’s training and evaluation of copy catalogers using RDA for monographic cataloging (books, ebooks, video recordings, maps) and the writing of local procedures.
