Hegemonic Knowledge Structures In Mesh: Implications For Medical Librarianship, Stacy Brody, Erin Anthony, Emily Drabinski Oct 2021

Hegemonic Knowledge Structures In Mesh: Implications For Medical Librarianship, Stacy Brody, Erin Anthony, Emily Drabinski

Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations

Objective

Controlled vocabularies are necessary for clinical research and clinical practice. When medical librarians use the same language to describe the same phenomena, scientific knowledge advances and best practices can be developed. MeSH is never objective. These headings always reflect some ways of understanding the world and exclude others. This project attempts to understand how bias is embedded in the controlled terms that structure medical knowledge and implications for medical librarians.

Methods

The project team analyzes exemplar headings related to race and ethnicity and gender and sexuality to understand and reflect on the problem of hegemonic knowledge structures in MeSH. …

Working For A Better World: The Librarian As A Change Agent, An Activist And A Social Entrepreneur, Mia H. Mathiasson, Henrik Jochumsen

New Librarianship Symposia Series: Fall 2021

For many years, the social role of librarians has been a topic of heated debates, both within the library field and within library research. Such debates have traditionally been about questions of neutrality and the professional identity in librarianship. Recently, visions of librarians as radical positive change agents (Lankes 2016) have influenced and shaped this debate, raising new questions about neutrality or “post-neutrality”, professional agency and personal and political ideologies. However, what does it mean to be a radical positive change agent? To expand our understanding of the librarian as a radical positive change agent, this paper introduces the concepts …

Revisiting The Ideal Of Neutrality, Anne-Sofie Bollerup Oct 2021

Revisiting The Ideal Of Neutrality, Anne-Sofie Bollerup

New Librarianship Symposia Series: Fall 2021

Revisiting the ideal of neutrality

The idea of a neutral library and a neutral librarian is appealing. Without influencing or judging, the librarian trusts the citizens own judgement and steps away from her own opinion in order to serve and guide the users. The notion of neutrality as an ideal has been the dominating position among both librarians and Library and Information Science-researchers.

Advocates for the principle of neutrality claim that the idea of neutrality is both an expression of representative democracy and respect for the individual’s rights and that neutrality is an active choice (Blomgreen & Sundeen, 2020; Tewell, …

The Intersection Of Community Engagement And Library Science, Katherine A. Laflamme

Librarian Publications

A community is not just a place where people live, but an aggregation of folks brought together, whether by chance or design, who share like avocations. This article details frameworks for community engagement, and also identifies the discernible intersection between community engagement work and librarianship. The main focus is to look at these intersecting fields and establish what can be done to elevate a cohesive, homogeneous patron experience and embrace the larger community as a whole.

Assessment Of The Concept Of Strategic Planning In Nigerian Librarianship, Tope Florence Dahunsi Phd., Gbenga Odunayo Adetunla

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper examined the concept of strategic planning in librarianship. This article becomes pertinent because few studies have examined academic libraries' planning documents to see how they are prioritizing among the competing issues and challenges facing them in the last two decades. This paper addresses the gap in the literature, theory and practice. The paper argued that effective strategic planning involves understanding the library domain, assessing relevant resource base and creating a shared view of the future, by asking fundamental questions such as what do libraries need to do to support excellence in service delivery and remain competitive in …

A Case Study Of Singapore Management University Libraries: Adopting A Mixed Methods Approach Towards Collection Evaluation, Li Min, Samantha Lim, Biddy Casselden

Research Collection Library

With rising costs and limited resources, it has become increasingly important for academic libraries to make acquisition decisions prudently to build a collection that meets its users' learning, teaching, and research needs. As such, Singapore Management University's (“SMU”) Libraries use a patron-driven acquisitions process, whereby acquisition decisions are guided by users' needs and requests. This article seeks to investigate if the current patron-driven acquisitions approach adequately meets the research needs of SMU's users through a mixed methods approach. A collection analysis was first conducted on the SMU Libraries' publications' references from the years 2017 to 2018 using the Scopus database. …

“Just Like When I Was A Liaison”: Applying A Liaison Approach To Functional Library Models, Kristin Hoffmann, Emily Carlisle-Johnston Mar 2021

“Just Like When I Was A Liaison”: Applying A Liaison Approach To Functional Library Models, Kristin Hoffmann, Emily Carlisle-Johnston

Western Libraries Publications

In this exploratory paper we consolidate themes discussed in literature to highlight three principles of liaison librarianship: building relationships, anticipating and meeting needs, and drawing on specialized expertise. These principles capture how liaison librarians approach their professional activities and together comprise what we define as a liaison approach. Through stories of our own work as scholarly communication librarians, we explore how a liaison approach can extend beyond subject liaison models to be relevant for librarians in functional roles. In sharing our stories, we prompt academic librarians in a variety of roles to consider how the perspective of a liaison approach …

The Significance Of Access To Information—And The Challenges It Faces In Librarianship, Shannon M. Oltmann, Emily Jm Knox, Chris Peterson

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Access to information is a fundamental value of professional librarianship and library and information science more generally; however, providing such access can be impeded by certain practices of librarianship, as this article describes. We focus on obtaining a better understanding of the extent of censorship practices within information institutions and the effects of restricted access to information on both individuals and communities. This article draws on several theoretical frameworks including regulative and constitutive censorship, information poverty, access as a human right, and the importance of individual autonomy. This research provides a more solid foundation for librarians and other information professionals …

Mi Casa, Su Casa: Librarians Serving Students From The Comfort Of Their Homes, Christopher M. Jimenez, Sarah J. Hammill, Elana Karshmer, Holly Morganelli

Works of the FIU Libraries

To respond proactively to the pandemic, the Libraries moved many services and programs online. Providing online services is nothing new for librarians; using the technologies available to replicate and improve on the outcomes these services have on student learning has required creativity and new ways of thinking. To this end, we have increased our use of Zoom, Slack, and YouTube to offer support, allowing students to interact in ways that mimic F2F library services. To increase visibility we adapted popular events to an online modality such as Language Day conversations and open mic events to enrich student engagement. Several unique …

From Classroom To The Field Of Library Practice: The Gaps And Its Cost In The Librarianship Profession., Oluwaseun Lekan Ipadeola, Aderonke Ayobami Ogungbade Miss

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Librarianship is a service-oriented profession which focuses on managing relevant information resources to meet diverse needs of users. The goals of librarianship, particularly its role in transmission of knowledge cannot be achieved without users occupying a huge portion in the process of information services; this preoccupation has implications for how librarianship is and will be practiced.

In modern usage, professions tend to have certain qualities in common. A profession is always held by a person, and it is generally that person's way of generating income.

A specialized knowledge of the concerned field is needed by the professional. Those persons who …

A Reflection On The Dialectical Relationship Of Librarian | Teacher: The Need For Pedagogical Training In Core Mlis Curriculum, Melanie C. Locay Feb 2021

A Reflection On The Dialectical Relationship Of Librarian | Teacher: The Need For Pedagogical Training In Core Mlis Curriculum, Melanie C. Locay

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis maps a shift in my understanding of knowledge production and teaching and learning. Teaching has a critical role in Librarianship, yet there is a glaring absence of teacher training across MLIS programs. Drawing from established literature on Critical Pedagogical theory, multiple logics of inquiry, and Critical Librarianship we can adopt practices of teaching and learning that elevate marginalized voices and center reflexive theory. This thesis includes a scope of applications of pedagogical theory to LIS practice and identifies an immediate need for an overhaul of the Master’s in Library and Information Sciences core curricula.

Introducing The Copyright Anxiety Scale, Amanda Wakaruk, Céline Gareau-Brennan, Matthew Pietrosanu

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Navigating copyright issues can be frustrating to the point of causing anxiety, potentially discouraging or inhibiting legitimate uses of copyright-protected materials. A lack of data about the extent and impact of these phenomena, known as copyright anxiety and copyright chill, respectively, motivated the authors to create the Copyright Anxiety Scale (CAS). This article provides an overview of the CAS’s development and validity testing. Results of an initial survey deployment drawing from a broad cross-section of respondents living in Canada and the United States (n = 521) establishes that the phenomenon of copyright anxiety is prevalent and likely associated with …

Teaching With Intent: Applying Culturally Responsive Teaching To Library Instruction, Priscilla Seaman, Chapel Cowden, Sarah Copeland, Lu Gao

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

Despite increasingly diverse classrooms, librarians may teach to the middle without considering the divergent experiences of the actual students in the class. Additionally, the centrality of whiteness in academia and librarianship may contribute to a lack of inclusivity in the library instruction classroom. Culturally responsive teaching (CRT) provides a framework for realizing inclusivity for culturally diverse students. This article presents theoretically grounded, practical applications of CRT for the library instruction classroom within three suggested areas for improvement: preparation, communication, and facilitation.

The University of Georgia’s Alexander Campbell King Law Library has a staff of around 25 with a strong culture of face-to-face communication, collegiality and socialization. Our work is often team-driven, and small groups walk to nearby coffee shops nearly daily for informal meetings and camaraderie. When we transitioned rapidly to a work-from-home environment in mid-March, the library’s leadership was concerned not only that every staff member would …
