An Exploration Of Academic Librarian Positions Dedicated To Serving First Year College Students, Katelyn Angell

Collaborative Librarianship

Within library literature there are many articles that describe academic librarians’ experiences working with first year college students. For example, teaching information literacy skills, assessing student learning, and serving as a personal librarian. However, there is not much formal research that compiles and investigates the professional responsibilities, campus partnerships, challenges, and successes of librarians in a first year experience (FYE) role. The existence of numerous FYE librarian positions combined with a lack of scholarship exploring this important role necessitated an empirical study surveying these librarians to learn more about their jobs.

Stony Brook University Libraries teamed up with Professor Peg Christoff from Stony Brook's Department of Asian and Asian American Studies to collaborate on an exciting digital initiative. Each semester, students in Christoff's Women in US-Asian Relations class propose, request, and conduct interviews with women making significant contributions in the field. Students record and analyze these interviews, and deliver a written report and class presentation of their findings. After each semester, files are sent to the University Libraries where the Digital Projects Librarian and the Web Services Librarian collaborate to make them available as a digital collection on the open source …

We describe collaboration between a health promotion professor and librarian to design a course in the learning management system D2L that does not use a textbook. Instead of a textbook, materials from professional and governmental organizations, supplemented with library materials are used. This approach encourages critical thinking to integrate information from multiple sources. Students also become familiar with information sources they will use after graduation

In 2017 the University of Massachusetts Medical School became a member of ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) through a regional library consortium. Over the course of the year, the library made efforts to establish ORCID implementations with the institution’s faculty profile system. However, progress was insufficient by the end of the year to warrant membership renewal. In this lightning talk, we will discuss our efforts to get ORCID off the ground and the positive lessons we learned in the process.

Over the last decade, Field Museum staff have worked to build enduring partnerships with local Filipinx-American community members. These partnerships engage participants in the stewardship of the collection, reinterpreting entangled object meanings and connecting the Museum’s collection to the lived experiences of modern communities. Through collaborative digitization efforts and events the Philippine Co-Curation partnership works to confront a colonial past while offering a gathering space for local Filipinx-Americans. In an effort to eliminate redundancies in thesis and dissertation cataloging at the University of Arkansas, a working group was devised to create a semi-automated workflow. This new, multi-departmental workflow eliminates redundancies, allowing us to provide better access to the intellectual endeavors of the scholars on our campus. This paper describes the experience of the collaboration within multiple library departments and departments across campus; acknowledges the importance of library and campus collaboration with examples of success and advice from the literature; and emphasizes clear and consistent communication, meeting user needs, and streamlined and innovative workflows.

Community collaborations have become key drivers for the development of our library’s digital initiatives (DI) program. While collaborative partnerships can complicate the process of getting DI work completed, they can also positively contribute to decision making around digitization projects, metadata use, user interface (UI) design, and infrastructure development. Over the course of two years, a team of librarians and programmers from LSU Libraries migrated the 186 collections of the Louisiana Digital Library from OCLC's CONTENTdm platform over to the open-source Islandora platform.

Early in the process, the team understood the value of creating a reproducible metadata transformation pipeline, because there were so many unknowns at the beginning of the process along with the certainty that mistakes would be made. This presentation will describe how the team used innovative and collaborative tools, such as Trello, Ansible, Vagrant, VirtualBox, git and GitHub to accomplish the task.

This column describes a process for integrating information literacy (IL) and evidence-based medicine (EBM) content within a new school of medicine curriculum. The project was a collaborative effort among health sciences librarians, curriculum deans, directors, and faculty. Collection stewardship responsibilities of academic librarians continue to be supported by approval plans, large e-resource packages, and material leasing programs. But while those technologies and programs can save time, librarians still find it challenging to engage with in-depth collection projects like systematic weeding, evaluation, and use analysis. At the same time, student employees are seeking opportunities for experiential learning and acquiring skills translatable to the professional world. The authors suggest some creative ways to match librarians’ collection needs and students’ job expectations by providing opportunities for these employees to collaborate with librarians in the management, development, and marketing of collections.

This case study demonstrates how librarians at LaGuardia Community College led a college-wide knowledge management project to implement Ask LaGuardia, an online knowledge base where users can find answers to common questions on navigating this large, urban college. Students had been experiencing difficulty receiving clear, correct, and consistent answers to their questions while staff had been challenged by information silos. LaGuardia’s president chose the Library for a leadership role in this initiative supporting a broader strategy of better alignment between Academic and Student Affairs. In 2017, a team of librarians and archivists at Western University developed local Information Literacy Learning Outcomes (ILLOs). The resulting document outlined the skills and understanding that Western University students should demonstrate at the end of a four-year undergraduate degree—specifically, the skills relating to accessing, assessing, and applying information. This article focuses on the challenges and opportunities encountered during the collaborative process as well as the approach employed by the team in the development of these ILLOs.

School librarians occupy a unique position to offer supports for first year teachers to build resilience, reduce burnout, and ensure retention. The researcher used the psychology theory of resilience to develop the Continuum of Care model which initiates in mentoring and moves toward a collaborative partnership. Fifteen school librarians in one urban district recruited 26 new teachers in their schools to form the treatment group. All new teachers in the district were surveyed to establish their initial level of resilience and collect demographics. A comparison group of 26 new teachers were matched by scores on a resilience scale at the …

With a proliferation of information in the 21st century, new tools are necessary for deriving
meaning from the information in archival repositories and recordkeeping programs. With
embracing distant learning techniques such as data and text mining, and visualization projects
archivists, records managers, and researchers can learn in a deeper way. Examining archival
tradition and more recent Archives 2.0 initiatives, this essay posits that this meaningful learning
best occurs by embracing new technology. Only then will the ideals of interactivity and
decentralized authority be realized.
